# True North I

**True North** (foaled 1940) was a successful [American](/source/United_States) [Thoroughbred](/source/Thoroughbred) racehorse for which the [True North Handicap](/source/True_North_Handicap) at [Belmont Park](/source/Belmont_Park) is named.[1]

## Background

True North was bred and raced by businessman [W. Deering Howe](/source/W._Deering_Howe), a grandson of [Charles Deering](/source/Charles_Deering), Chairman of the [Board of Directors](/source/Board_of_Directors) and a founding major shareholder in [International Harvester](/source/International_Harvester).[2] True North was trained by future [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) inductee, [Preston M. Burch](/source/Preston_M._Burch).[3]

## Racing career

True North's wins included the [Fall Highweight Handicap](/source/Fall_Highweight_Handicap) in 1945 and the [Interborough Handicap](/source/Interborough_Handicap) in 1946.
