# Tripidium ravennae

***Tripidium ravennae***, [synonym](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) ***Saccharum ravennae*** (and many others),[1] with the common names **ravennagrass**[2] and **elephant grass**, is a species of [grass](/source/Poaceae) in the genus *[Tripidium](/source/Tripidium)*. It is native to [Southern Europe](/source/Southern_Europe), [Western Asia](/source/Western_Asia) and [South Asia](/source/South_Asia). It is known in [North America](/source/North_America) as an [introduced species](/source/Introduced_species), where it is sometimes an [invasive](/source/Invasive_species) and troublesome [noxious weed](/source/Noxious_weed).

## Uses

Ravennagrass is a large, aggressive grass that has been sold in [nurseries](/source/Plant_nursery) for use as an [ornamental grass](/source/Ornamental_grass) in [gardens](/source/Garden), and for stabilizing soil to prevent [erosion](/source/Erosion). It is sold under the name "hardy [pampas grass](/source/Cortaderia)."

## Invasive species

*Tripidium ravennae* is now established as an invasive species in several parts of North America, including [Glen Canyon National Recreation Area](/source/Glen_Canyon)[3] in [Utah](/source/Utah), the [Rio Grande Valley State Park](/source/Rio_Grande_Valley_State_Park) in [Albuquerque, New Mexico](/source/Albuquerque,_New_Mexico),[4] and parts of [California](/source/California).[5] It grows in the moist soil of riparian habitats including [marshes](/source/Marsh) and riverbanks.

This perennial grass grows in large, dense clumps from a network of [rhizomes](/source/Rhizome). It produces erect stems which can reach 13 ft (4m) in height. The serrated leaves are up to a meter long. The [inflorescence](/source/Inflorescence) is a plume-like panicle of spikelets covered in white or pale-colored silky hairs.
