# Tripartite Alliance

The **Tripartite Alliance** is an alliance between the [African National Congress](/source/African_National_Congress) (ANC), the [Congress of South African Trade Unions](/source/Congress_of_South_African_Trade_Unions) (COSATU) and the [South African Communist Party](/source/South_African_Communist_Party) (SACP).[4][5] The ANC holds a [plurality](/source/Plurality_(voting)) in the [South African parliament](/source/South_African_parliament), while the SACP and COSATU have not contested any [democratic election](/source/Democratic_election) in South Africa.

The Alliance was forged in 1990 after the release of [Nelson Mandela](/source/Nelson_Mandela). The movements were opposed to white minority rule by the [apartheid](/source/Apartheid) government.[5] The Tripartite Alliance is also known as the **Revolutionary Alliance** or just **the Alliance**.[5]
