The '''Trient''' ({{IPA|fr|tʁiɛ̃}}) is a [river](/source/river) in western [Valais](/source/Valais). It takes its source at the [Trient Glacier](/source/Trient_Glacier) in the [Mont Blanc Massif](/source/Mont_Blanc_Massif) and joins the [Rhone](/source/Rhone) between [Vernayaz](/source/Vernayaz) and [Martigny](/source/Martigny). Only two villages are located along the Trient: [Trient](/source/Trient%2C_Switzerland) and Vernayaz. However, the '''Trient Valley''' includes many other settlements: notably [Finhaut](/source/Finhaut), [Les Marécottes](/source/Les_Mar%C3%A9cottes) and [Salvan](/source/Salvan%2C_Switzerland), all located on south-east facing terraces, at significant elevations above the valley floor.

The Trient is essentially a wild alpine river mostly fed by glacial runoff. High in the Alps it is fed by numerous small streams that run down the surrounding mountains. Notable streams are the Eau Noire (collecting the Barberine below the [Lac d'Emosson](/source/Lac_d'Emosson)) and the Triège. Shortly after passing the Trient Gorges, the river flows into the Rhone just south-east of the village of Vernayaz.<ref>{{cite map |url=https://s.geo.admin.ch/8e376a6c2b |title=Le Trient |scale= |series=National Map 1:25'000 |edition= |date= |publisher=Federal Office of Topography – [swisstopo](/source/swisstopo) |location=Wabern, Switzerland |isbn= |via=map.geo.admin.ch |access-date=2020-01-16}}</ref>
