***Trichopelma*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [South American](/source/South_America) and [Caribbean](/source/Caribbean) [tarantulas](/source/Theraphosidae) first described by [Eugène Simon](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Simon) in 1888.[2]

## Taxonomy

This genus was erected by [Eugène Simon](/source/Eug%C3%A8ne_Simon) in 1888 with *[Trichopelma illetabile](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Trichopelma_illetabile&action=edit&redlink=1)* and the [type species](/source/Type_species) *[Trichopelma nitidum](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Trichopelma_nitidum&action=edit&redlink=1)*.[2] A major review of [mygalomorph](/source/Mygalomorph) spiders by [Robert J. Raven](/source/Robert_J._Raven) in 1985 led to the genus being greatly enlarged, merging it with other genera *Hapalopinus*, *Leptofischelia*, *Merothele*, *Obaerarius* and *Stothis*. Raven placed this expanded genus in the family [Barychelidae](/source/Barychelidae).[3] In 1994, he proposed moving *Trichopelma* to the related family [Theraphosidae](/source/Theraphosidae), but without any new evidence, the move was not generally accepted. In 2014 [José P. L. Guadanucci](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jos%C3%A9_P._L._Guadanucci&action=edit&redlink=1) carried out a morphological [phylogenetic analysis](/source/Phylogenetics) of some mygalomorph genera, including *Trichopelma*. The study supported Raven's hypothesis, and the genus was moved to Theraphosidae as a member of a re-limited subfamily [Ischnocolinae](/source/Ischnocolinae) [sensu stricto](/source/Sensu_stricto).[4]
