# Trichogaster

***Trichogaster*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [gouramis](/source/Gourami) native to [South Asia](/source/South_Asia) from [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan) to [Myanmar](/source/Myanmar).[3] It is the only genus in the [monotypic](/source/Monotypy) [subfamily](/source/Subfamily) **Trichogastrinae** as set out in the 5th Edition of *[Fishes of the World](/source/Fishes_of_the_World)*, although that book states that there are two genera, the other being *Colisa*[4] which is treated as a [synonym](/source/Synonym_(taxonomy)) of Trichogaster by [Fishbase](/source/Fishbase) and the [Catalog of Fishes](/source/Catalog_of_Fishes). Fishbase also places the genus in the [Luciocephalinae](/source/Luciocephalinae).[3][5] Species of this genus are very popular in the [aquarium](/source/Aquarium) trade.

## Etymology

The name *Trichogaster* comes from the [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) words θρίξ (*thríx*) which means hair and Ancient Greek γαστήρ (*gastḗr*) which means stomach, a reference to the single long, hair-like ray in their [pelvic fins](/source/Pelvic_fin).[6]
