'''Triakel''' is a [Swedish](/source/Sweden) [folk](/source/folk_music) band. They mostly perform old Swedish folk songs, particularly those from the [Jämtland](/source/J%C3%A4mtland) area, but also include songs by contemporary folk artists.

Triakel was founded in 1995 by [Emma Härdelin](/source/Emma_H%C3%A4rdelin) ([Garmarna](/source/Garmarna)), Kjell-Erik Eriksson ([Hoven Droven](/source/Hoven_Droven)) and Janne Strömstedt (former [Hoven Droven](/source/Hoven_Droven) member); Eriksson and Strömstedt had to perform together using only the [fiddle](/source/fiddle) and [harmonium](/source/Pump_organ) on New Year's Eve 1994 following a lost bet, and the performance was so successful that they decided to continue with the project. Härdelin, later on, joined the newly formed band as the singer, and the name "''Triakel''" (a kind of sweet, black [liquorice](/source/liquorice) in the [Swedish dialect](/source/J%C3%A4mtland_dialects) of [Jämtland](/source/J%C3%A4mtland); the word is etymologically related to the English "[treacle](/source/wiktionary%3Atreacle)") was chosen after a long discussion.<ref name=Allmusic>{{cite web|url={{allMusic|class=artist |id=mn0000021609 |pure_url=yes}} |title=Triakel Biography |first=Chris |last=Nickson |publisher=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) |accessdate=1 June 2014}}</ref>
