== Biography ==
Richter grew up in [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) prior to the fall of the [wall](/source/Berlin_Wall). His hometown Karl-Marx-Stadt is today called Chemnitz. His mother raised him and his older brother as a [single parent](/source/single_parent). The family made their home in a large [Plattenbau](/source/Plattenbau) development named after [Fritz Heckert](/source/Fritz_Heckert).<ref name="Zeit-2018-45">Marcel Laskus: ''[https://www.zeit.de/2018/45/trettmann-chemnitz-heimat-neonazis Kratzer in der Platte]''. In: ''[Die Zeit](/source/Die_Zeit)'', No. 45/2018, dated 31 October 2018.</ref> Richter later used the name "Heckert" in his production company. The area also served as a backdrop to the music video of his single "Grauer Beton" (grey concrete) in 2017. Richter cites [RnB](/source/RnB) acts as his earliest musical influences, which he learned to appreciate when listening to the records of his mother and to radio stations from [West Germany](/source/West_Germany).<ref name="Juice-2017-11-17">Wenzel Burmeier: ''[https://juice.de/trettmann-feature-diy-juice-182/ Trettmann: "Was gibt es Schöneres, als wenn sich Styles mischen?"]''. Richter gained his first impressions of [hip-hop](/source/hip-hop) during an appearance of the [New York City Breakers](/source/New_York_City_Breakers) on West German TV in 1984. He also cited the film [Beat Street](/source/Beat_Street) as an early visual influence,<ref name="Juice-2017-11-17" /> which premiered in East German cinemas during 1985.<ref>''[https://www.mdr.de/zeitreise/hip-hop-in-der-ddr100.html Hip Hop in der DDR: Improvisiert und originell]''. From 1984 on, he attended a middle school with a special track for music, dancing and performance.<ref>[https://talk-o-mat.podigee.io/11-trettmannxinesanioli Trettmann x Ines Anioli]. Interview dated 5 July 2018 on Talk-o-mat.</ref> Richter graduated from high school in Chemnitz after the [end of Communism](/source/Peaceful_Revolution) in East Germany.

In the early 1990s, Richter travelled to [Jamaica](/source/Jamaica) for the first time. [Jamaican music](/source/Jamaican_music) continued to influence his style.<ref>Ralf Theil: ''[https://www.redbull.com/de-de/trettmann-billie-holiday Mit Trettmann & KitschKrieg auf Jamaika: "Billie Holiday"]''. Interview in ''[Freie Presse](/source/Freie_Presse_(Saxony))'', dated 15 September 2017.</ref> His debut single under the moniker Ronny Trettman appeared in 2006, staying four weeks in the German single charts. He performed his songs in an [Upper Saxon dialect](/source/Upper_Saxon_German), satirising the German reggae/[dancehall](/source/dancehall) scene.{{Citation needed|date=August 2020}} In 2010, he released his first studio album, dropping the Saxon dialect and comedy act. He followed up with a second album in 2013.

From 2016 on, he removed the first name of his artist persona, performing simply as Trettmann from then on. He started his collaboration with [KitschKrieg](/source/KitschKrieg), releasing three [EPs](/source/Extended_play) in rapid succession. Music critics described his style as "beats [...] in the manner of [cloud rap](/source/cloud_rap)".<ref name="FAZ-2017-10-06">Kornelius Friz: ''[https://www.faz.net/aktuell/feuilleton/pop/album-der-woche/leben-im-beton-das-album-diy-von-trettmann-15234127-p2.html Da lebt noch was im Beton]''.
