A **transportation authority**, **transportation agency**, or **transportation department** is a [government agency](/source/Government_agency) that regulates, manages, or administers [transportation](/source/Transport)-related matters, such as [roads](/source/Road), [transportation infrastructure](/source/Transportation_infrastructure), [traffic management](/source/Traffic_management), or [traffic code](/source/Traffic_code).[1][2]

Transportation authorities go by a number of names, such as "[department of transportation](/source/Department_of_transportation)" or "[ministry of transport](/source/List_of_ministries_of_transport_by_country)", among others. They often manage other government agencies that oversee specific fields of transportation, such as [civil aviation authorities](/source/Civil_aviation_authority), [highway authorities](/source/Highway_authority), [logistics](/source/Logistics) [regulators](/source/Regulatory_agency), [rail transport](/source/Rail_transport) regulators, [maritime transport](/source/Maritime_transport) regulators, and transportation safety boards.

Some transportation authorities, such as [Greater Vancouver](/source/Greater_Vancouver)'s [TransLink](/source/TransLink_(British_Columbia)), have the power to impose [excise taxes](/source/Excise) ([fuel taxes](/source/Fuel_tax)) on [gasoline](/source/Gasoline), [diesel fuel](/source/Diesel_fuel), and other [motor fuels](/source/Motor_fuel).

In [North America](/source/North_America), the term "transportation authority" is often used to refer to [public transport](/source/Public_transport) agencies operating [buses](/source/Bus) and [rapid transit](/source/Rapid_transit) in [metropolitan areas](/source/Metropolitan_area), otherwise referred to as [transit districts](/source/Transit_district) or [passenger transport executives](/source/Passenger_transport_executive). Examples of such **public transport authorities** (or **public transit authorities**) include the [New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority](/source/Metropolitan_Transportation_Authority), the [Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority](/source/Los_Angeles_County_Metropolitan_Transportation_Authority), and [Greater Montreal](/source/Greater_Montreal)’s [Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain](/source/Autorit%C3%A9_r%C3%A9gionale_de_transport_m%C3%A9tropolitain).
