***Aphia minuta***, the **transparent goby**, is a [species](/source/Species) of the [goby](/source/Goby) native to the northeastern [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean) where it can be found from [Trondheim](/source/Trondheim), [Norway](/source/Norway) to [Morocco](/source/Morocco). It is also found in the [Mediterranean](/source/Mediterranean_Sea), [Black Sea](/source/Black_Sea) and the [Sea of Azov](/source/Sea_of_Azov). It is a [pelagic](/source/Pelagic) species, inhabiting inshore waters and [estuaries](/source/Estuaries). It can be found at depths of from the surface to 97 metres (318 ft), though it is usually found at 5 to 80 metres (16 to 262 ft), over sandy and muddy bottoms and also in [eelgrass](/source/Zostera) beds. This species can reach a length of 7.9 centimetres (3.1 in) [TL](/source/Fish_measurement). It is an important species to local [commercial fisheries](/source/Commercial_fisheries). It is currently the only known extant member of its [genus](/source/Genus).[1] A fossil relative, †*[Aphia macrophthalma](/source/Aphia_macrophthalma)* Schwarzhans *et al*., 2016 is known from the [Middle Miocene](/source/Middle_Miocene) of [Serbia](/source/Serbia).[2]

## Gastronomy

This fish is appreciated in Spain as part of the [Andalusian](/source/Andalusian_cuisine), [Catalan](/source/Catalan_cuisine) and [Valencian cuisines](/source/Valencian_cuisine),[3] and in Italy as part of the [Italian cuisine](/source/Italian_cuisine).[4] In Andalusia where they are called *chanquetes*, they are traditionally served deep-fried, with fried eggs and roasted or fried [bell pepper](/source/Bell_pepper).[5] Due to their high price and to their now protected species status in Spain, they are often replaced by some species of East Asian [noodlefishes](/source/Salangidae), locally called *chanquete chino* (Chinese *chanquete*), *[Neosalanx tangkahkeii](/source/Neosalanx_tangkahkeii)* and *[Protosalanx](/source/Protosalanx)*.[6][7] This replacement is often done openly, but sometimes it is done fraudulently.[7]
