# Trailmakers

***Trailmakers*** is a [sandbox video game](/source/Sandbox_video_game) developed and published by Danish [independent](/source/Independent_video_game_developer) developer [Flashbulb Games](/source/Flashbulb_Games).[1][page needed] The game is a [3D](/source/3D_computer_graphics) physics-based vehicle construction simulator with [open world](/source/Open_world) exploration elements.[2] The game was made available for [early access](/source/Early_access) on [Steam](/source/Steam_(service)) on 30 January 2018, and fully released on 18 September 2019 for PC and [Xbox One](/source/Xbox_One).[3] The game was released for [PlayStation 4](/source/PlayStation_4) on 21 May 2020.[4]

## Gameplay

*Trailmakers* can be played in various game modes including [adventure](/source/Adventure), [sandbox](/source/Sandbox_game), and [racing](/source/Racing). All game modes can be played in either [single-player](/source/Single-player) or [multiplayer](/source/Multiplayer) and the game offers [modding](/source/Mod_(video_games)) support on PC. The camera is usually [third-person](/source/Third-person_(video_games)), but can be changed to [first-person](/source/First-person_(gaming)) by the player.[5]

The game features 8 sandbox style maps that can be accessed for free: Stranded, Danger Zone, Test Zone, Treasure Island, Space Sector, Airborne, Great Carrier Reef, and Pioneers. There are DLCs that give the player access to maps: High Seas Expansion (High Seas), Airborne Expansion (Airborne), and Frozen Tracks (Hoff). Other maps the player can play in are: Dethrone Island, which can only be accessed through Multiplayer, Race Island, and Rally, which is Singleplayer exclusive.[6]

## Release

The game was originally released as an [early access](/source/Early_access) title on the [Steam](/source/Steam_(software)) store on 30 January 2018 and garnered over 100,000 sales.[3] The game was fully released for PC and [Xbox One](/source/Xbox_One) on 18 September 2019, and for [PlayStation 4](/source/PlayStation_4) on 21 May 2020.[4] By February 2025, *Trailmakers* reached over 5 million players across all platforms.[7]
