**Traci Chee** is an American author of [young adult fiction](/source/Young_adult_fiction), best known for *the [Sea of Ink and Gold](/source/Sea_of_Ink_and_Gold)* trilogy and *[We Are Not Free](/source/We_Are_Not_Free)*. Chee is [fourth-generation](/source/Yonsei_(Japanese_diaspora)) [Japanese American](/source/Japanese_Americans) and resides in California where she grew up.[1]

## Education and career

Chee studied literature and creative writing at the [University of California, Santa Cruz](/source/University_of_California%2C_Santa_Cruz), and earned a Master of Arts degree from [San Francisco State University](/source/San_Francisco_State_University).[2] After obtaining her master's degree, Chee entered a writing contest called The Pitch Wars, which gives new writers a chance to show their work to literary agents by pairing them up with established mentors. Chee was paired up with author [Renée Ahdieh](/source/Ren%C3%A9e_Ahdieh).[1] The Pitch Wars led her to obtain a literary agent and publishing deal with [Putnam](/source/Putnam_Press) for her first book *The Reader*.[1]

*Sea of Ink and Gold* trilogy is a work of [fantasy](/source/Fantasy) about a world in which no one knows about books and reading.[3] In addition to multiple [plot lines](/source/Dramatic_structure) and a [story-within-a-story](/source/Story_within_a_story), the book contains several [ciphers](/source/Cipher) for the reader to discover and decode.[4] The books appeared on [The New York Times Best Seller list](/source/The_New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list).[5]

### *We Are Not Free* (2020)

Chee's book *We Are Not Free* is a work of [historical fiction](/source/Historical_fiction) about [Japanese-American](/source/Japanese_Americans) teenagers during World War II facing forced relocation and imprisonment at the [Japanese-American internment camps](/source/Internment_of_Japanese_Americans), or [segregated military service in war-torn Europe](/source/Japanese-American_service_in_World_War_II).[6] It is based on interviews with her relatives, as well as letters from her *[nisei](/source/Nisei)* grandparents who, although [American citizens](/source/Citizenship_of_the_United_States) from [San Francisco](/source/History_of_the_Japanese_in_San_Francisco), were incarcerated as teens at [Topaz War Relocation Center](/source/Topaz_War_Relocation_Center) during the war due their ethnicity.[7] It won the [Printz Honor](/source/Michael_L._Printz_Award) award in 2021 and was a finalist for the [National Book Awards 2020 for Young People's Literature.](/source/National_Book_Award_for_Young_People's_Literature)[8]

*A Thousand Steps into Night* is a Japanese-influenced fantasy about [demons](/source/Y%C5%8Dkai), adventure, and plans gone awry.[9] It was longlisted for the [National Book Awards 2022 for Young People's Literature](/source/National_Book_Award_for_Young_People's_Literature).[10]
