The **Tour de la Provence** is an early-season [bicycle stage race](/source/Road_bicycle_racing#Stage_races) in the [Provence](/source/Provence) region of [France](/source/France).[1] It is organized by southern French newspaper *[La Provence](/source/La_Provence)*, which serves as the race's title sponsor for its first three years. It is held in February, as a [2.1 event](/source/UCI_race_classifications) on the [UCI Europe Tour](/source/UCI_Europe_Tour) calendar.[2][3] and became part of the [UCI ProSeries](/source/UCI_ProSeries) in 2020. *La Provence* has entrusted the organization of the event to Serge Pascal, who also organizes the [Tour du Haut Var](/source/Tour_du_Haut_Var). The inaugural edition of 2016 was won by [Thomas Voeckler](/source/Thomas_Voeckler).[4][5]

## History

Organizers intend to build on the tradition of the former [Tour du Vaucluse](/source/Tour_du_Vaucluse) and the [Tour du Sud-Est](/source/Tour_du_Sud-Est), two races in the same region that had their last editions in 1998 and 1983 respectively.[3] The event is part of a series of cycling stage races being held in the [south of France](/source/South_of_France) in February, following the [Étoile de Bessèges](/source/%C3%89toile_de_Bess%C3%A8ges), [La Méditerranéenne](/source/La_M%C3%A9diterran%C3%A9enne) and the [Tour du Haut Var](/source/Tour_du_Haut_Var). The Tour La Provence takes place mid-week between the Tour du Haut-Var and the [Classic Sud-Ardèche](/source/Classic_Sud-Ard%C3%A8che).[6] These races are competed mainly by French teams and are considered early-season preparations for [Paris–Nice](/source/Paris%E2%80%93Nice), the first, multi-stage European [World Tour](/source/UCI_World_Tour) race in March.[6]

## Route

The race is run over three stages in the [Bouches-du-Rhône](/source/Bouches-du-Rh%C3%B4ne) department of the [Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur](/source/Provence-Alpes-C%C3%B4te_d'Azur) region, in the [south of France](/source/Southern_France).[3]
