# Torsten Hoefler

**Torsten Hoefler** is a [Professor](/source/Professor) of [Computer Science](/source/Computer_Science) at [ETH Zurich](/source/ETH_Zurich)[1] and the Chief Architect for Machine Learning at the [Swiss National Supercomputing Centre](/source/Swiss_National_Supercomputing_Centre).[2] He is a laureate of the [ACM Prize in Computing](/source/ACM_Prize_in_Computing) for his pioneering work on [HPC](/source/High-performance_computing) and large-scale [AI](/source/AI) systems, where he laid many of the foundations of the quickly-growing AI [datacenter](/source/Datacenter) industry. Earlier in his career, he led the Advanced Application and User Support team at the [Blue Waters](/source/Blue_Waters) Directorate of the [National Center for Supercomputing Applications](/source/National_Center_for_Supercomputing_Applications),[3] and held an [adjunct professor](/source/Adjunct_professor) position at the Computer Science Department at the [University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign](/source/University_of_Illinois_at_Urbana_Champaign).[4] His expertise lies in large-scale [parallel computing](/source/Parallel_computing) and high-performance computing systems. He focuses on applications in large-scale artificial intelligence as well as climate sciences.

Hoefler is an [IEEE Fellow](/source/IEEE_Fellow),[5] [ACM Fellow](/source/ACM_Fellow),[6] and a member of the European [Academy of Sciences](/source/Academy_of_Sciences) [Academia Europaea](/source/Academia_Europaea).[7] He is also a Fellow of the [European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS)](/source/European_Laboratory_for_Learning_and_Intelligent_Systems). His [Erdos number](/source/Erdos_number) is two.[8]

He has been invited to present several [keynote](/source/Keynote) lectures at major international conferences such as [ACM's](/source/Association_for_Computing_Machinery) [Federated Computing Research Conference](/source/Federated_Computing_Research_Conference),[9] [IEEE](/source/IEEE) Cluster,[10] HPC Asia, Supercomputing Asia,[11] or the [International Symposium on Distributed Computing](/source/International_Symposium_on_Distributed_Computing).[12] Hoefler is known to give widely accessible presentations at major interdisciplinary events such as the Heidelberg Laureate Forum, the [ADIA](/source/ADIA) Lab Symposium, or the Global Young Scientists Summit, featuring Nobel and Turing laureate speakers.

## Career

Hoefler received his [Diplom](/source/Diplom) in [Computer Science](/source/Computer_Science) from [TU Chemnitz](/source/TU_Chemnitz) where he received the best student award in 2005.[13] He worked on [high-performance computing](/source/High-performance_computing) systems from the very beginning of his career. He continued his studies at [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University), the home of [Open MPI](/source/Open_MPI), under the guidance of Prof. Andrew Lumsdaine. He received his [PhD](/source/PhD) in [Computer Science](/source/Computer_Science) in 2008 from [Indiana University](/source/Indiana_University) and was subsequently honored with the university's Young Alumni Award[14] as well as Distinguished Alumni Award[15]

He continued his work on the [Message Passing Interface](/source/Message_Passing_Interface) standard as a key member of the MPI Forum[16] responsible for the chapters on Collective Communication and Process Topologies as well as co-authoring the chapter on One-Sided Communications.[17]

In 2010, he joined the [National Center for Supercomputing Applications](/source/National_Center_for_Supercomputing_Applications) at the [University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign](/source/University_of_Illinois_at_Urbana-Champaign) (UIUC). As lead for application performance analysis and support, he supported the design and deployment of the [Blue Waters](/source/Blue_Waters) [Supercomputer](/source/Supercomputer).[3] He also held a position as [adjunct professor](/source/Adjunct_professor) at UIUC's [Computer Science](/source/Computer_Science) department. He accepted a position as [assistant professor](/source/Assistant_professor) at [ETH Zurich](/source/ETH_Zurich) in 2011,[18] where he received [tenure](/source/Tenure) in 2017,[19] and is [full professor](/source/Full_professor) from 2020.[20]

Hoefler has held various visiting researcher positions at [French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission](/source/French_Alternative_Energies_and_Atomic_Energy_Commission) in [France](/source/France), [CINECA](/source/CINECA) in [Italy](/source/Italy), as well as [Argonne National Laboratory](/source/Argonne_National_Laboratory), [Sandia National Laboratory](/source/Sandia_National_Laboratory), and [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) in the United States.[4] As a consultant, he supported [Cray Inc.](/source/Cray_Inc.) in the area of high-performance networking and [Microsoft Corporation](/source/Microsoft_Corporation) in the areas of [quantum computing](/source/Quantum_computing) and large-scale [artificial intelligence](/source/Artificial_intelligence) systems. He spent his [sabbatical](/source/Sabbatical) in 2019 at [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) helping to establish various AI supercomputing efforts including the Maia 100 system.[21][22][23]

Hoefler has been an elected member of the [ACM SIGHPC](/source/ACM_SIGHPC) executive committee since its founding in 2011.[24]

He was elected [IEEE Fellow](/source/IEEE_Fellow) for “contributions to large-scale parallel processing systems and supercomputers”,[5] [ACM Fellow](/source/ACM_Fellow) for “foundational contributions to High-Performance Computing and the application of HPC techniques to machine learning”,[6] and he received the [IEEE](/source/IEEE) [Sidney Fernbach Award](/source/Sidney_Fernbach_Award) in 2022 for “application-aware design of HPC algorithms, systems and architectures, and transformative impact on scientific computing and industry”.[25]

Hoefler received the inaugural [Jack Dongarra](/source/Jack_Dongarra) award at [ISC High Performance](/source/ISC_High_Performance) Conference in 2023.[26][27][28] He was appointed as a senior fellow of the [Abu Dhabi Investment Authority](/source/Abu_Dhabi_Investment_Authority) Labs in 2023.[29][30]

## Research impact

Hoefler is known for his contributions to the [Message Passing Interface](/source/Message_Passing_Interface) (MPI) standard. He served as author for the chapters “Collective Communication” and “Process Topologies” in MPI-2.2 [\[1\]](https://www.mpi-forum.org/docs/mpi-2.2/mpi22-report.pdf) and the chapters “Collective Communication”, “One-Sided Communications”, and “Process Topologies” in MPI-3 [\[2\]](https://www.mpi-forum.org/docs/mpi-3.0/mpi30-report.pdf). For the MPI-3 standardization, he chaired the [Collective Communications](/source/Collective_operation) and [Topology](/source/Network_Topology) working groups.[31]

He developed principles for the implementation of nonblocking collective operations and remote memory access that are widely used in MPI implementations such as [OpenMPI](/source/OpenMPI), [MPICH](/source/MPICH), and derivatives.[32] Nonblocking collective operations such as allreduce, allgather, or broadcast form the basis of modern AI training systems.[33]

After co-authoring a pioneering paper on parallel [deep learning](/source/Deep_learning)[34] and during his sabbatical at [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft), he coined the term “3D parallelism” in modern [artificial intelligence](/source/Artificial_intelligence) training that organizes [data parallelism](/source/Data_parallelism), [pipeline](/source/Pipeline) parallelism, and operator/tensor parallelism into one consistent view.[35]

In his work on high-speed interconnects, he co-developed several award-winning [network topologies](/source/Network_topologies)[35][36][37] and contributed routing algorithms that are used in the OpenSM routing manager on [InfiniBand](/source/InfiniBand) [computer clusters](/source/Computer_clusters).[38] He co-chaired the Transport Working Group in [Ultra Ethernet](/source/Ethernet) 1.0, which defines a next-generation interconnect for [Artificial Intelligence](/source/Artificial_Intelligence) and [High-performance computing](/source/High-Performance_Computing) networking. He was recognized with the Ultra Ethernet Consortium Visionary Leadership Award in 2025.

On the application side, Hoefler focuses on improving the performance of [climate simulations](/source/Climate_model) as a [digital twin](/source/Digital_twin)[39][40][41] and [machine learning](/source/Machine_learning) for climate simulations.[42] He has been a convener of the Berlin Summit in Earth Virtualization Engines[43] to develop strategies to enable global access to high-resolution climate simulations.[44][45]

### Scientific reproducibility

Hoefler has been vocal about improving reproducibility of performance measurements in [high-performance computing](/source/High-performance_computing)[46] and later [machine learning](/source/Machine_learning). The latter is featured in IEEE Computer Journal as a cover feature on Research Reproducibility.[47] As Technical Papers chair of [ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference](/source/ACM/IEEE_Supercomputing_Conference) (SC18), he introduced a new revision-based review process to the conference to improve the quality of the publications.[48] His group received the [SIGHPC](/source/SIGHPC) Certificate of Appreciation for reproducible methods at the [ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference](/source/ACM/IEEE_Supercomputing_Conference) (SC22) ACM student cluster competition.[49] His paper on HammingMesh received the [ACM/IEEE Supercomputing Conference](/source/ACM/IEEE_Supercomputing_Conference) (SC22) Best Reproducibility Advancement Award.[50][49] He also presented the opening keynote at the first ACM Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability.[51]
