**Torrington Square** is a square in [Bloomsbury](/source/Bloomsbury), owned by the [University of London](/source/University_of_London), located in central [London, England.](/source/London)[1] Today, the square is largely non-residential since most of the houses have been demolished by the university. The southern end of the square is dominated by the University of London's [Senate House](/source/Senate_House_(University_of_London)). [Birkbeck College](/source/Birkbeck_College) and the [School of Oriental and African Studies](/source/School_of_Oriental_and_African_Studies) (SOAS) are also located here. To the southwest is [Malet Street](/source/Malet_Street) and to the southeast is [Russell Square](/source/Russell_Square). The square is the site of a weekly [farmers' market](/source/Farmers'_market), held on Thursdays.[2]

## Notable people

[John Desmond Bernal](/source/John_Desmond_Bernal) lived in a flat at the top of no. 22. In November 1950, [Pablo Picasso](/source/Pablo_Picasso), a fellow communist, en route to a Soviet-sponsored[3] World Peace Congress in Sheffield created a mural in Bernal's flat.[4] In 2007, this became part of the [Wellcome Trust's collection](/source/Wellcome_Collection)[5][6] for £250,000. It was displayed at the 2012 [Tate Britain](/source/Tate_Britain) exhibition on *Picasso and Modern British Art*.[7] The poet [Christina Rossetti](/source/Christina_Rossetti) lived at 30 Torrington Square until her death here on 29 December 1894 from breast cancer.[8]
