Gray was three times an all-[Big East](/source/Big_East_Conference_(1979%E2%80%932013)) selection for the Virginia Tech Hokies. His college teams won two Big East championships and in 1995, upset the [Texas Longhorns](/source/Texas_Longhorns_football) in the [1995 Sugar Bowl](/source/1995_Sugar_Bowl_(December)).
==Professional career==
Following his playing career at Tech, Gray was drafted by the [Minnesota Vikings](/source/Minnesota_Vikings) 49th overall in the second round of the [1997 NFL draft](/source/1997_NFL_draft).[{{Cite web |title=1997 NFL Draft Listing |url=https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1997/draft.htm |access-date=2023-03-30 |website=Pro-Football-Reference.com |language=en}}] He played two seasons with the [Minnesota Vikings](/source/Minnesota_Vikings) backing up [Orlando Thomas](/source/Orlando_Thomas) at free safety. He started five games as a rookie, including two playoff contests. He contributed as a starter in the nickel package and as a special teams player before retiring in the spring of 2000 due to a knee injury. The Vikings advanced to the playoffs in each of his three seasons.
