# Toronto Standard

The ***Toronto Standard*** newspaper was published in [Toronto](/source/Toronto) before the [Canadian Confederation](/source/Canadian_Confederation). It is listed among Toronto's early newspapers[1] as the *Toronto Standard and General Advertiser*.[2][3] It was a weekly conservative newspaper, published by [James Northey](/source/James_Northey), that advocated for [Protestant Ascendancy](/source/Protestant_Ascendancy). Founded in 1848, it closed in 1849.[3]
