**Torgersen Island** is a small rocky island lying just east of [Litchfield Island](/source/Litchfield_Island) in the entrance to [Arthur Harbour](/source/Arthur_Harbour), off the south-west coast of [Anvers Island](/source/Anvers_Island) in the [Palmer Archipelago](/source/Palmer_Archipelago) of [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). It was surveyed by the [Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey](/source/Falkland_Islands_Dependencies_Survey) in 1955 and named by the [UK-APC](/source/UK-APC) for Torstein Torgersen, first mate of the *Harbor* in late February 1955, preceding the vessel [MV *Norsel*](/source/MV_Norsel_(1945)) in one of the ship's boats and making soundings.

## Birds

The island formed part of the Northern Arthur Harbour [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) (IBA) number 013, identified as such by [BirdLife International](/source/BirdLife_International) because it supports significant [seabird](/source/Seabird) [breeding colonies](/source/Bird_colony).[1] The Arthur Harbour IBA was delisted in 2015.[2]
