**Torae Liston Carr**[1] (born March 18, 1977), known [mononymously](/source/Mononym) as **Torae**, is an American [rapper](/source/Rapper) from the [Coney Island](/source/Coney_Island) section of [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), [New York](/source/New_York_(state)). He has released a number of solo albums and collaborative works, and operates the independent record label Internal Affairs Entertainment.

## Career

Torae gained recognition by collaborating with [DJ Premier](/source/DJ_Premier) and [Marco Polo](/source/Marco_Polo_(producer)). After releasing his debut mixtape *[Daily Conversation](/source/Daily_Conversation)* in 2008, he and Polo went on to receive critical acclaim for their collaborative LP entitled *[Double Barrel](/source/Double_Barrel_(album))*. In 2007, [HipHopDX](/source/HipHopDX) featured him in their DXNext underground hip-hop series.[2] In the same year, he was named Chairman's Choice in *[XXL](/source/XXL_(magazine))*.[3] In addition to Polo and Premier, Torae has worked with producers Eric G., [Black Milk](/source/Black_Milk), and [Khrysis](/source/Khrysis). Torae has collaborated frequently with fellow Brooklyn MCs [Skyzoo](/source/Skyzoo) and [Sha Stimuli](/source/Sha_Stimuli). He has also worked with Tash of [Tha Alkaholiks](/source/Tha_Alkaholiks), Teflon, [Chaundon](/source/Chaundon), [Sean Price](/source/Sean_Price), [Masta Ace](/source/Masta_Ace), [Wale](/source/Wale_(rapper)), [Nefew](/source/Nefew), and [Talib Kweli](/source/Talib_Kweli).

He released his debut studio album, *[For the Record](/source/For_the_Record_(Torae_album))*, on November 1, 2011. The album features the production from [Pete Rock](/source/Pete_Rock), [Large Professor](/source/Large_Professor), [DJ Premier](/source/DJ_Premier), and the Grammy Award-winning [9th Wonder](/source/9th_Wonder). The following year, he released an EP entitled *Off the Record*, which comprises eight songs recorded during the making of his debut album. On May 27, 2014, he and fellow Brooklyn rapper [Skyzoo](/source/Skyzoo) released their collaborative album, *[Barrel Brothers](/source/Barrel_Brothers)*. Carr ghost writes for many female rappers.
