Hutton was born in Chislehurst, Kent, the son of Rear Admiral [Reginald Hutton](/source/Reginald_Hutton), who had participated in the [Battle of Jutland](/source/Battle_of_Jutland) during the First World War and had been awarded the [Distinguished Service Order](/source/Distinguished_Service_Order) and two bars during the Second World War.<ref name=teleg/>

Hutton was educated at [Dartmouth Royal Naval College](/source/Dartmouth_Royal_Naval_College).<ref name=teleg/>
