He played [high school](/source/high_school) football at [Davis Senior High School](/source/Davis_Senior_High_School_(California)) and [college football](/source/college_football) for the [Stanford Cardinal](/source/Stanford_Cardinal_football). Cline was a member of the [Phi Delta Theta](/source/Phi_Delta_Theta) fraternity and studied [qualitative economics](/source/qualitative_economics) during his time at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University).

Cline was selected by the [Buffalo Bills](/source/Buffalo_Bills) with the 33rd pick in the fourth round of the [1995 NFL draft](/source/1995_NFL_draft). He played in the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) for the Bills from 1995 to 1997, [Pittsburgh Steelers](/source/Pittsburgh_Steelers) in 1999, and [San Francisco 49ers](/source/San_Francisco_49ers) in 1999.
