# Tony Alford

**Tony Alford** (born November 27, 1968) is an American [college football](/source/College_football) coach. He is the [running backs](/source/Running_back) coach and run game coordinator for the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan), positions he has held since 2024. Alford has served as an assistant college football coach throughout the Midwest for over 30 years, including at [Notre Dame](/source/Notre_Dame_Fighting_Irish_football) and [Ohio State](/source/Ohio_State_Buckeyes_football), before coaching the [Michigan Wolverines](/source/Michigan_Wolverines_football).

## Playing career

Alford graduated from [Doherty High School](/source/Doherty_High_School) in [Colorado Springs, Colorado](/source/Colorado_Springs,_Colorado) after moving to the area his Senior year from [Kent, Ohio](/source/Kent,_Ohio). He went on to play for [Colorado State](/source/Colorado_State_Rams_football) from 1987 to 1990. He was a 1,000-yard rusher and a [Doak Walker Award](/source/Doak_Walker_Award) nominee at Colorado State. He gained 1,035 yards in 1989 as a junior under first-year Rams coach [Earle Bruce](/source/Earle_Bruce). Alford was named first-team all-[Western Athletic Conference](/source/Western_Athletic_Conference) that season and honorable mention All-America by*[USA Today](/source/USA_Today)*.[1]

Following his graduation, Alford was on the preseason squad for the [Denver Broncos](/source/Denver_Broncos) of the [National Football League](/source/National_Football_League) (NFL) and for the [Birmingham Fire](/source/Birmingham_Fire) of the [World League of American Football](/source/NFL_Europe) (WLAF).

## Coaching career

Alford has a long history of coaching success under several top coaches. He has worked under [Dan McCarney](/source/Dan_McCarney), [Steve Kragthorpe](/source/Steve_Kragthorpe), [Rick Neuheisel](/source/Rick_Neuheisel), [Charlie Weis](/source/Charlie_Weis), [Brian Kelly](/source/Brian_Kelly_(American_football_coach)), [Urban Meyer](/source/Urban_Meyer), [Ryan Day](/source/Ryan_Day), [Sherrone Moore](/source/Sherrone_Moore), and [Kyle Whittingham](/source/Kyle_Whittingham).

He has coached several successful players including [J. K. Dobbins](/source/J._K._Dobbins), [Ezekiel Elliott](/source/Ezekiel_Elliott), [Mike Weber](/source/Mike_Weber_(American_football)), [Michael Floyd](/source/Michael_Floyd) and Victor Anderson.

## Personal life

Alford is married to his wife Trina and has three sons, Rylan, Kyler and Braydon.
