# Tongpo Line

The **Tongp'o Line** was a non-electrified 15.6 km (9.7 mi) long [railway](/source/Railway) line of the [Korean State Railway](/source/Korean_State_Railway) in [North Korea](/source/North_Korea), connecting [Chongsŏng](/source/Chongsong_Station) on the [Hambuk Line](/source/Hambuk_Line) with [Tongp'o](/source/Tongpo_Station).[1]

## History

It was originally opened by the [Tomun Railway](/source/Domun_Railway) together with the [Sangsambong](/source/Sambong_Station)−[Chongsŏng](/source/Chongsong_Station) section of the [West Tomun Line](/source/Hambuk_Line#History) on 1 November 1924.[2] It was subsequently nationalised by the [Chosen Government Railway](/source/Chosen_Government_Railway) in 1929, and from 1934 to 1945 it was managed by the [South Manchuria Railway](/source/South_Manchuria_Railway).[3] Finally, after the partition of Korea it became part of the Korean State Railway.[1] The date of closure is not known.

Coal was shipped from mines on this line to the [Kim Chaek Iron & Steel](/source/Kimchaek_Iron_%26_Steel) Complex at [Kimchaek](/source/Kimchaek) and the [Ch'ŏngjin Steel Works](/source/Chongjin_Steel_Co) in [Ch'ŏngjin](/source/Chongjin), with the order of collection from each line arranged in the order of the total weight of the outbound cars.[4]
