**António Leonel Vilar Nogueira Sousa** (Portuguese pronunciation: [\[tuˈnɛl\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Portuguese); born 13 April 1980), known as **Tonel**, is a Portuguese former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [central defender](/source/Central_defender). He was also a [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)).

Over ten seasons, he amassed [Primeira Liga](/source/Primeira_Liga) totals of 223 games and 16 goals, mainly representing [Sporting CP](/source/Sporting_CP) with which he won four major titles. He also spent three years in the [Croatian Football League](/source/Croatian_Football_League) with [Dinamo Zagreb](/source/GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb).

## Club career

### Porto and Marítimo

Born in [Lourosa (Santa Maria da Feira)](/source/Lourosa_(Santa_Maria_da_Feira)), Tonel came through the youth system of [FC Porto](/source/FC_Porto), and made his professional debut when he was loaned out to [Académica de Coimbra](/source/Acad%C3%A9mica_de_Coimbra_(football)) for [2000–01](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_Segunda_Liga), helping them to promote to the [Primeira Liga](/source/Primeira_Liga) in his [second year](/source/2001%E2%80%9302_Segunda_Liga).[2] Despite earning a good reputation during his three-season spell,[3] he was deemed surplus to requirements by his parent club and was released, moving to [C.S. Marítimo](/source/C.S._Mar%C3%ADtimo) in summer 2004 as part of an exchange deal with Porto which saw [Pepe](/source/Pepe_(footballer%2C_born_1983)) arrive at the [Estádio do Dragão](/source/Est%C3%A1dio_do_Drag%C3%A3o).[4]

Tonel picked up some European experience during Marítimo's [UEFA Cup](/source/UEFA_Europa_League) [tie](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_UEFA_Cup) against [Rangers](/source/Rangers_F.C.).[5] He partnered with Dutchman [Mitchell van der Gaag](/source/Mitchell_van_der_Gaag) in defence[6] and became one of the team's leading figures, playing 28 league games and scoring once in a 2–1 home win over [Boavista F.C.](/source/Boavista_F.C.) on 25 September 2004.[7]

### Sporting CP

On 23 July 2005, after an impressive [season](/source/2004%E2%80%9305_Primeira_Liga), Tonel signed a three-year deal with [Sporting CP](/source/Sporting_CP) for €500,000.[8] His second stint with a club of the [Big Three](/source/Big_Three_(Portugal)) was much more successful than the first, as he was everpresent at the back four alongside [Brazil](/source/Brazil_national_football_team) international [Ânderson Polga](/source/%C3%82nderson_Polga),[9] also scoring the occasional goal on [set pieces](/source/Set_piece_(football)).[10]

After renewing his link with the *Lions* until 2011,[11] Tonel scored five competitive goals in [2007–08](/source/2007%E2%80%9308_Primeira_Liga), including one in a 2–1 away victory over [FC Dynamo Kyiv](/source/FC_Dynamo_Kyiv) in the [group stage](/source/2007%E2%80%9308_UEFA_Champions_League) of the [UEFA Champions League](/source/UEFA_Champions_League) (incidentally, Polga netted the other).[12] In late October 2008, after an injury in a draw at [F.C. Paços de Ferreira](/source/F.C._Pa%C3%A7os_de_Ferreira), he lost his place to youth graduate [Daniel Carriço](/source/Daniel_Carri%C3%A7o), and never regained it again during [that season](/source/2008%E2%80%9309_Primeira_Liga), although he himself took Polga's place midway through [the following campaign](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_Primeira_Liga).[13]

On 11 March 2010, Tonel was [sent off](/source/Ejection_(sports)) at the end of a [Europa League last 16](/source/2009%E2%80%9310_UEFA_Europa_League_knockout_phase) first leg game away to [Atlético Madrid](/source/Atl%C3%A9tico_Madrid) for striking [Sergio Agüero](/source/Sergio_Ag%C3%BCero). Fellow defender [Leandro Grimi](/source/Leandro_Grimi) had been dismissed in the first half of the goalless draw, and Sporting lost the tie on the [away goals rule](/source/Away_goals_rule).[14]

### Dinamo Zagreb

On 27 August 2010, after falling out of favour with new manager [Paulo Sérgio](/source/Paulo_S%C3%A9rgio_(footballer%2C_born_1968)), the 30-year-old Tonel signed for [GNK Dinamo Zagreb](/source/GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb).[15] He made his official debut in an [Eternal derby](/source/Eternal_derby_(Croatia)) match drawn 1–1 away to [HNK Hajduk Split](/source/HNK_Hajduk_Split), on 11 September;[16] he was awarded the No. 13 shirt in the [Croatian Football League](/source/Croatian_Football_League), but played with No. 28 in European fixtures as [Dario Šimić](/source/Dario_%C5%A0imi%C4%87) had been registered with the former number before retiring. His [first season](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb_season) resulted in the club winning the league and [cup](/source/Croatian_Football_Cup) [double](/source/Double_(association_football)), and he scored in the 5–1 win (8–2 aggregate) over [NK Varaždin](/source/NK_Vara%C5%BEdin_(1931%E2%80%932015)) in the [cup final](/source/2011_Croatian_Football_Cup_Final) on 11 May.[17][18]

Tonel added a second consecutive double in [2011–12](/source/2011%E2%80%9312_GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb_season), after playing in a [3–1 cup final defeat](/source/2012_Croatian_Football_Cup_Final) of [NK Osijek](/source/NK_Osijek) in May.[19] He was released at the end of his contract, in December 2012.[20]

### Return to Portugal

On 7 January 2013, Tonel returned to his homeland and joined top-division [S.C. Beira-Mar](/source/S.C._Beira-Mar), signing until June 2014.[21] After [suffering relegation](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Primeira_Liga), however, he terminated his contract and went on to spend a further two seasons in the [Segunda Liga](/source/Liga_Portugal_2) with [C.D. Feirense](/source/C.D._Feirense).[22]

Aged 35, Tonel returned to the top flight on 9 June 2015 after agreeing to a one-year contract with [C.F. Os Belenenses](/source/C.F._Os_Belenenses).[23] Early into [the campaign](/source/2015%E2%80%9316_Primeira_Liga), he was criticised for committing a 90th-minute handball [penalty](/source/Penalty_kick_(association_football)) in favour of his former team Sporting at the [Estádio José Alvalade](/source/Est%C3%A1dio_Jos%C3%A9_Alvalade), with his action resulting in a 1–0 loss for Belenenses.[24][25]

### Management

After retiring, Tonel became [sporting director](/source/Sporting_director) of his hometown club [Lusitânia FC](/source/Lusit%C3%A2nia_F.C.). In March 2017, he replaced [Martelinho](/source/Martelinho) as its manager in the [Aveiro Football Association](/source/Aveiro_Football_Association)'s first district league.[26] He was himself relieved of his duties in June.[27]

In January 2018, Tonel was appointed at [C.F. União de Lamas](/source/C.F._Uni%C3%A3o_de_Lamas) in the same competition.[28] He left six months later, having led them to fourth place.[29]

## International career

Tonel made his debut with [Portugal](/source/Portugal_national_football_team) in a [UEFA Euro 2008](/source/UEFA_Euro_2008) [qualifier](/source/UEFA_Euro_2008_qualifying) against [Kazakhstan](/source/Kazakhstan_national_football_team) in [Coimbra](/source/Coimbra), featuring 77 minutes of a 3–0 win on 15 November 2006.[30] His second [cap](/source/Cap_(sport)) came more than three years later, on 3 March 2010, as he was called up as a last-minute replacement for injured [Ricardo Carvalho](/source/Ricardo_Carvalho) for a [friendly](/source/Exhibition_game#International_football) with [China](/source/China_national_football_team)[31] and played in the 2–0 win.[32]
