The '''Tompo''' ({{langx|ru|Томпо}}; {{langx|sah|Томпо}}) is a river in the Sakha Republic ([Yakutia](/source/Yakutia)), [Russia](/source/Russia), a right tributary of the [Aldan](/source/Aldan_(river)), part of the [Lena](/source/Lena_(river)) basin. River Tompo gives its name to the [Tompo District](/source/Tompo_District). It flows across desolate regions, [Topolinoye](/source/Topolinoye) being the only inhabited place in the long course of the river.<ref name="GЕ">[Google Earth](/source/Google_Earth)</ref> The Tompo is not navigable.<ref name="GSE-B"/>

==Course==
The Tompo originates in the southern slopes of the [Elgi Plateau](/source/Elgi_Plateau).<ref name=WR/> For about {{convert|400|km|abbr=on}}, the river displays the characteristics of a typical mountain river, flowing within a deep and narrow valley bound by steep slopes.

In its uppermost course the Tompo runs roughly northward along the northern side of the [Suntar-Khayata](/source/Suntar-Khayata) mountains; after roughly {{convert|80|km|abbr=on}} it turns and follows a generally westward direction for about {{convert|200|km|abbr=on}} through the southern part of the [Elgi Plateau](/source/Elgi_Plateau). Downstream from the mouth of the [Delinya](/source/Delinya), its 2nd largest tributary, which flows from the central part of the [Yana-Oymyakon Highlands](/source/Yana-Oymyakon_Highlands), the Tompo bends SSE into a roughly {{convert|130|km|abbr=on}} long deep gorge, separating the [Verkhoyansk Range](/source/Verkhoyansk_Range) proper to the northwest and the group of three parallel ranges formed by the [Ulakhan-Bom](/source/Ulakhan-Bom), [Sette-Daban](/source/Sette-Daban) and the [Skalisty Range](/source/Skalisty_Range) to the southeast. After the mouth of the [Menkule](/source/Menkule) River, it emerges from the mountains and, flowing in a southwesterly direction, enters the eastern side of the [Central Yakutian Plain](/source/Central_Yakutian_Plain), where its valley becomes very wide and swampy, its riverbed dividing into lazily-flowing arms as the speed of the flow decreases.
