He has been the head coach of [Wake Forest](/source/Wake_Forest_Demon_Deacons_baseball) since the start of the [2010 season](/source/2010_NCAA_Division_I_baseball_season). In [collegiate summer baseball](/source/List_of_collegiate_summer_baseball_leagues), Walter was the head coach of the [Valley Baseball League](/source/Valley_Baseball_League)'s [New Market Rebels](/source/New_Market_Rebels) in 1994 and the [Cape Cod League](/source/Cape_Cod_League)'s [Cotuit Kettleers](/source/Cotuit_Kettleers) from 1997–1998. Walter received national media attention prior to the [2011](/source/2011_NCAA_Division_I_baseball_season) season for [donating his kidney](/source/Kidney_donation) to Wake Forest baseball player Kevin Jordan. In his senior year of high school, Jordan had developed [ANCA](/source/Anti-neutrophil_cytoplasmic_antibody) [vasculitis](/source/vasculitis), a condition that severely affected his kidneys. After Jordan enrolled at Wake Forest in fall 2010, the condition did not improve, and by January 2011 he required a kidney transplant. Since none of Jordan's family members qualified as a donor, Walter offered to be a kidney donor for Jordan.
