**Tom Slingsby** [OAM](/source/Medal_of_the_Order_of_Australia) (born 5 September 1984) is an Australian competitive sailor. Slingsby's first successes came sailing [Laser dinghies](/source/Laser_dinghy), where he won three consecutive world championships and the 2012 Olympic gold medal. Slingsby was the strategist for the [America's Cup](/source/America's_Cup)-winning [Team Oracle USA](/source/Team_Oracle_USA) in 2013. In 2016 he skippered the winner-of-line honours in the [Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race](/source/Sydney_to_Hobart_Yacht_Race) line. Following this he skippered the Australian team in the inaugural [SailGP](/source/SailGP) competition.

## Career highlights

2007 – Won the [Laser dinghy](/source/Laser_dinghy) world championships.

2008 – Ranked number one in the Laser dinghy class prior to the [2008 Summer Olympics Laser competition](/source/Sailing_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Laser) but finished 22nd overall.

2008 – Won [Australian Sailing](/source/Australian_Sailing) [Male Sailor of the Year Award](/source/Australian_Yachtsman_of_the_Year)

2010 – Won the Laser dinghy world championships at Hayling Island, UK. He was also named the male [ISAF World Sailor of the Year](/source/ISAF_World_Sailor_of_the_Year).

2010 – Won the [Etchells](/source/Etchells) Class World Championship as crew with [Andrew Palfry](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Andrew_Palfry&action=edit&redlink=1), with fellow America's Cup legend [John Bertrand](/source/John_Bertrand_(sailor%2C_born_1946)) helming.[2]

2011 – Won the Laser ISAF World Sailing Championships at Fremantle, Australia.

2011 – Won Australian Sailing [Male Sailor of the Year Award](/source/Australian_Yachtsman_of_the_Year)

2012 – Won the Laser dinghy world championship at Boltenhagen Germany for his fifth world title[3]

2012 – Won the Men's Laser Gold Medal at the [2012 Summer Olympics](/source/2012_Summer_Olympics) in London.[4]

2012 – Won the [Australian Institute of Sport](/source/Australian_Institute_of_Sport) Athlete of the Year Award with swimmer [Alicia Coutts](/source/Alicia_Coutts).[5]

2016 – Won the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race skippering the supermaxi yacht [Perpetual Loyal](/source/Perpetual_Loyal).

2019 – Won the inaugural [SailGP](/source/SailGP) skippering the Australian Team sailing [F50 foiling catamarans](/source/F50_(catamaran)).

2019 – Won the Chandler Macleod [Moth](/source/Moth_(dinghy)) Worlds

2020 – Won Australian Sailing Male Sailor of the Year Award

2022 – Won Australian Sailing Male Sailor of the Year Award

In December 2013 Slingsby was a crew member aboard racing supermaxi yacht Perpetual Loyal in the [2013 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race](/source/2013_Sydney_to_Hobart_Yacht_Race), with his other celebrity crew members, [Karl Stefanovic](/source/Karl_Stefanovic), [Larry Emdur](/source/Larry_Emdur), [Phil Waugh](/source/Phil_Waugh), [Jude Bolton](/source/Jude_Bolton) and [Guillaume Brahimi](/source/Guillaume_Brahimi).[8]

Slingsby received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the [2014 Australia Day Honours](/source/2014_Australia_Day_Honours) for "service to sport as a gold medallist at the London 2012 Olympic Games".[9]

Slingsby, as the Captain of Team Australia, won the 2019 season 1 of Sail GP[10][11]
