Rothman attended [The Park School of Baltimore](/source/The_Park_School_of_Baltimore) and graduated in 1972.

==Film career==
Rothman began his film career in 1986 co-producing [Jim Jarmusch](/source/Jim_Jarmusch)'s ''[Down by Law](/source/Down_by_Law_(film))''.

In 1987, he joined [Columbia Pictures](/source/Columbia_Pictures) as an executive vice president. In 1989, he became president of Worldwide Production for the [Samuel Goldwyn Company](/source/Samuel_Goldwyn_Company), where he worked with filmmakers including [Ang Lee](/source/Ang_Lee), [Anthony Minghella](/source/Anthony_Minghella) and [Kenneth Branagh](/source/Kenneth_Branagh).

Rothman worked at Fox Filmed Entertainment for 18 years. In 1994, he founded [Fox Searchlight Pictures](/source/Fox_Searchlight_Pictures). He served as chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment from 2000 to 2012.

In 2013, After Rothman left Fox, he joined [Sony Pictures](/source/Sony_Pictures) as chairman for [TriStar Pictures](/source/TriStar_Pictures) and would form [TriStar Productions](/source/TriStar_Productions) as a joint venture with existing Sony Pictures executives.
