**Tom Lister** (born **Thomas Brown**; 21 June 1978) is an English actor, known for his roles as [Carl King](/source/Carl_King) in *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* from 2004 to 2012, Harry Wainwright in *[Heartbeat](/source/Heartbeat_(British_TV_series))* and Rob Ingram in *[The Bill](/source/The_Bill)*.

## Early and personal life

Lister was born as Thomas Brown, but took on his mother's maiden name when acting to avoid confusion with another actor under the name of Tom Brown.[1] He is married to secondary school headteacher Jennifer Humpage and they have two sons.[2] Lister is a Christian.[3] He studied at [Birmingham School of Acting](/source/Birmingham_School_of_Acting) (BSA) for three years and graduated in 2001.

## Career

Lister began his career making appearances in series including *[Heartbeat](/source/Heartbeat_(UK_TV_series))*, *[Doctors](/source/Doctors_(2000_TV_series))* and *[The Bill](/source/The_Bill)*. In February 2004, he made his debut appearance on the [ITV](/source/ITV_(TV_channel)) [soap opera](/source/Soap_opera) *[Emmerdale](/source/Emmerdale)* as [Carl King](/source/Carl_King), a role he maintained for eight years until his departure on 18 October 2012. Lister appeared alongside his *Emmerdale* co-stars [Lucy Pargeter](/source/Lucy_Pargeter), [Nick Miles](/source/Nick_Miles), [Kelsey-Beth Crossley](/source/Kelsey-Beth_Crossley) and [Nicola Wheeler](/source/Nicola_Wheeler) as the [King family](/source/King_family_(Emmerdale)) in a special episode of *[All Star Family Fortunes](/source/All_Star_Family_Fortunes)*, playing against *[Coronation Street](/source/Coronation_Street)'*s Webster family and winning. He also appeared as singer [Jamie Cullum](/source/Jamie_Cullum) in *[Stars In Their Eyes](/source/Stars_In_Their_Eyes)*.

### Stage roles

Later in 2012, Lister appeared as Captain Hook in the [Sunderland Empire](/source/Sunderland_Empire) pantomime, *[Peter Pan](/source/Peter_Pan_(pantomime))*. He made his musical theatre debut in the world premiere of *The Water Babies* at the [Curve](/source/Curve_(theatre)) in Leicester on 24 April 2014 as Grimes. In 2014, Lister toured the UK as [Wild Bill Hickok](/source/Wild_Bill_Hickok) in the musical *[Calamity Jane](/source/Calamity_Jane_(musical))*. A few years later, he appeared in a West End revival of *[42nd Street](/source/42nd_Street_(musical))*.
