# Tom Coxon

**Thomas Coxon** (10 June 1883 – 30 January 1942) was an English [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played in the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League) for [Burslem Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.), [Stoke](/source/Stoke_City_F.C.), [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.), [Grimsby Town](/source/Grimsby_Town_F.C.), and [Leyton](/source/Leyton_F.C.).[1]

## Career

Coxon played for Bradeley before joining [Burslem Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) in August 1902.[2] He played two [Second Division](/source/Football_League_Second_Division) games in the [1902–03](/source/1902%E2%80%9303_Burslem_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season, and opened his account for the [1903–04](/source/1903%E2%80%9304_Burslem_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season with four goals in three games against [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.), [Bradford City](/source/Bradford_City_A.F.C.) (2), and [Grimsby Town](/source/Grimsby_Town_F.C.).[2] This made an impression on [rivals](/source/Potteries_derby) [Stoke](/source/Stoke_City_F.C.), who bought him for a £200 fee in October 1903.[2] He scored five goals in 21 [First Division](/source/Football_League_First_Division) games in the rest of the [1903–04](/source/1903%E2%80%9304_Stoke_F.C._season) campaign, finding himself in the scoresheet in games with [Bury](/source/Bury_F.C.), [Blackburn Rovers](/source/Blackburn_Rovers_F.C.), [The Wednesday](/source/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.), [Everton](/source/Everton_F.C.), and [Small Heath](/source/Birmingham_City_F.C.). However, he lost his first-team place at the [Victoria Ground](/source/Victoria_Ground) in the [1904–05](/source/1904%E2%80%9305_Stoke_F.C._season) season, playing in just four matches. He was then sold to league rivals [Middlesbrough](/source/Middlesbrough_F.C.).[1] After spending the [1905–06](/source/1905%E2%80%9306_in_English_football) season at [Ayresome Park](/source/Ayresome_Park), he returned to Burslem Port Vale in May 1906.[2] He was a firm first-team regular at the [Athletic Ground](/source/Athletic_Ground_(Cobridge)) in the [1906–07](/source/1906%E2%80%9307_Burslem_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season, scoring 12 goals in 41 league and cup games.[2] Coxon re-signed for Stoke after Vale suffered a financial crisis and went into [liquidation](/source/Liquidation) at the end of the season.[2] He played twelve matches for the "Potters" in [1907–08](/source/1907%E2%80%9308_Stoke_F.C._season), but left for [Grimsby Town](/source/Grimsby_Town_F.C.) after Stoke also had severe financial problems and entered liquidation.[1] He scored six goals in 61 Second Division games for the "Mariners" but left [Blundell Park](/source/Blundell_Park) after Grimsby were not re-elected to the [English Football League](/source/English_Football_League) in [1909–10](/source/1909%E2%80%9310_in_English_football). He later played for [Leyton](/source/Leyton_F.C.) and Grimsby Rovers.
