It is located in the [traditional district](/source/Traditional_districts_of_Norway) of [Vest-Telemark](/source/Vest-Telemark). The [administrative centre](/source/administrative_centre) of the municipality is the village of [Dalen](/source/Dalen%2C_Telemark). During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee). The municipality is named after the local river [Tokke](/source/Tokke_(river)) ({{langx|non|Þotka}}). The name is related to the name of the lake [Totak](/source/Totak) (from which the river originates). ===Coat of arms===
The [coat of arms](/source/coat_of_arms) was granted on 6 February 1987. The official [blazon](/source/blazon) is "[Or](/source/Or_(heraldry)) a [bear](/source/bear) [passant](/source/Passant_guardant) [sable](/source/Sable_(heraldry))" ({{langx|no|På gulll grunn ein gåande svart bjørn}}). This means the arms have a [field](/source/field_(heraldry)) (background) with a tincture of [Or](/source/Or_(heraldry)) which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The [charge](/source/charge_(heraldry)) is a bear which is displayed with a [tincture](/source/tincture_(heraldry)) of [sable](/source/sable_(heraldry)) which means it is black. The bear symbolizes the rich nature in the [forest](/source/forest)s in the municipality. The bear also plays a major role in many local [legend](/source/legend)s and stories. The arms were designed by Stein Davidsen. Tokke Municipality is located in the [Vest-Telemark](/source/Vest-Telemark) region. It borders [Vinje Municipality](/source/Vinje_Municipality), [Kviteseid Municipality](/source/Kviteseid_Municipality), [Seljord Municipality](/source/Seljord_Municipality), [Fyresdal Municipality](/source/Fyresdal_Municipality) (in [Telemark](/source/Telemark)) and [Valle Municipality](/source/Valle_Municipality) and [Bykle Municipality](/source/Bykle_Municipality) (in [Agder](/source/Agder)). The highest peak is ''Urdenosi'' which is {{convert|1520|m}} above sea level.
