**Toby Chu** (born 1977) is an American film and television [composer](/source/Composer) and artist of Chinese descent. He wrote the score to [Pixar](/source/Pixar)'s Oscar-winning animated short *[Bao](/source/Bao_(film))*.[1] Recent and notable scores include [Apple TV+](/source/Apple_TV%2B)'s *[Stillwater](/source/Stillwater_(TV_series))* (composed with [Kishi Bashi](/source/Kishi_Bashi)), [CBS](/source/CBS)'s *[True Lies](/source/True_Lies_(TV_series))* and the [Netflix Animation](/source/Netflix_Animation) film *[The Monkey King](/source/The_Monkey_King_(2023_film))*.

## Early life

Chu was born in [Washington D.C.](/source/Washington_D.C.) Chu is an American of Chinese descent. At an early age, Chu took guitar and piano lessons.[1][2]

## Education

In 1999, Chu earned a degree in film scoring from [Berklee College of Music](/source/Berklee_College_of_Music).[1][3]

## Career

He also scored [Bron Studios](/source/Bron_Studios)' *[Henchmen](/source/Henchmen_(film))*, [NBC](/source/NBC)’s *[The Brave](/source/The_Brave_(TV_series))*, and the Freeform original series *[Beyond](/source/Beyond_(2017_TV_series))*.
