**Tlilapan** is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Veracruz) located in the central zone in the [Mexican](/source/Mexico) [state](/source/List_of_states_of_Mexico) of [Veracruz](/source/Veracruz), about 85 kilometres (53 mi) from the state capital of [Xalapa](/source/Xalapa). It has an area of 23.85 square kilometres (9.21 sq mi). It is located at [18°48′N 97°06′W / 18.800°N 97.100°W / 18.800; -97.100](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Tlilapan&params=18_48_N_97_06_W_). The name comes from the [Nahuatl](/source/Nahuatl) language, meaning "Black creek". The village has existed since the 16th century and, following national independence, and was designated a municipality along with [Orizaba](/source/Orizaba), [San Andrés Tenejapan](/source/San_Andr%C3%A9s_Tenejapan), San Francisco Necoxtla, and San Juan del Rio. The municipal cemetery was established in 1880 and, in 1916 the first Municipal President was named.

## Geography

The municipality of Tlilapan is bordered to the north by [Rafael Delgado](/source/Rafael_Delgado%2C_Veracruz), to the south by [Huiloapan de Cuauhtémoc](/source/Huiloapan_de_Cuauht%C3%A9moc) and to the west by [Nogales](/source/Nogales_(municipality_of_Veracruz)).[1] It is watered by small rivers such as the Río Blanco.

The climate of Tlilapan is temperate, with abundant rainfall in summer and autumn.

## Agriculture

The chief agricultural products of Tlilapan are [maize](/source/Maize), [coffee](/source/Coffee) and [sugarcane](/source/Sugarcane).[2]

## Celebrations

In July, Tlilapan festival takes place the celebration of [Santiago Apostol](/source/John_the_Apostle), patron of the town, and in December a celebration takes place in honor of the [Virgen de Guadalupe](/source/Our_Lady_of_Guadalupe).
