Before becoming an MP, he served as a councillor on Bracknell District Council for Harmanswater from 1976 to 1983. Following the [1992 general election](/source/1992_United_Kingdom_general_election), Wood became a Government Whip.

At the [1997 general election](/source/1997_United_Kingdom_general_election) a swing of 13.9% from the Conservatives to Labour saw Wood defeated by [Labour Party](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) candidate [Barbara Follett](/source/Barbara_Follett_(politician)) by 11,582 votes.<ref name=voted>{{cite news | title = The Election: How the country voted | work = The Guardian | page = 6 | date = 1997-05-02 }}</ref>
