According to his memorial "He was an indulgent husband, a kind father, and a good master; just in his dealings, and highly charitable to the poor". He died on 23 October 1701, at the age of 84 years. He is buried in Oakley Church.

He was the eldest son of [Sir Timothy Tyrrell](/source/Timothy_Tyrrell_(died_1632)). He married [Elizabeth Ussher](/source/Elizabeth_Tyrrell_(n%C3%A9e_Ussher)),<ref>[http://www.thepeerage.com/p15263.htm#i152626 "Elizabeth Ussher"] on thepeerage</ref> the only daughter of Dr. [James Usher](/source/James_Usher), [Archbishop of Armagh](/source/Church_of_Ireland_Archbishop_of_Armagh) and [Primate of All Ireland](/source/Primate_of_All_Ireland), by whom he had four sons and eight daughters.

Their first son was [James Tyrrell](/source/James_Tyrrell_(writer)) and second son was [John Tyrrell](/source/John_Tyrrell_(Royal_Navy_officer)).<ref name="Burke's"/>
