# Timothy Sulivan

[Major General](/source/Major_General) **Timothy John Sulivan** [CB](/source/Order_of_the_Bath) [CBE](/source/Order_of_the_British_Empire) [DL](/source/Deputy_Lieutenant) (born 1946) is a former [British Army](/source/British_Army) officer who commanded [4th Division](/source/4th_Infantry_Division_(United_Kingdom)).

## Military career

Sulivan was [commissioned](/source/Commissioned_officer) into the [Royal Artillery](/source/Royal_Artillery) in 1966[2] and transferred into the [Blues and Royals](/source/Blues_and_Royals) in 1980.[3] He became commanding officer of the Blues and Royals in the late 1980s.[4]

He served as the only non-US member of [General Norman Schwarzkopf](/source/Norman_Schwarzkopf,_Jr.)'s strategic planning team during the [Gulf War](/source/Gulf_War)[5] for which he was appointed a [Commander of the Order of the British Empire](/source/Commander_of_the_Order_of_the_British_Empire)[6] and awarded the [Bronze Star Medal (US)](/source/Bronze_Star_Medal) in March 1991.[1]

He went on to become Commander of [7th Armoured Brigade](/source/7th_Armoured_Brigade_(United_Kingdom)) in 1991, Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff in 1993[7] and Director-General for Doctrine and Development in 1994.[8] After that he became Chief of Staff for the [Allied Rapid Reaction Corps](/source/Allied_Rapid_Reaction_Corps) in Bosnia in 1996 and [General Officer Commanding](/source/General_Officer_Commanding) [4th Division](/source/4th_Infantry_Division_(United_Kingdom)) in 1998 before he retired in 2001.[8]

In retirement he has become vice president for customer relations with [General Dynamics (UK) Ltd](/source/General_Dynamics).[5]
