==Life and ministry==
Costelloe was born in [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) on 3 February 1954. Educated there at St Peter's East Bentleigh and [Salesian College, Chadstone](/source/Salesian_College_(Chadstone)), he commenced teacher training at Christ College, Melbourne, before joining the [Salesians of Don Bosco](/source/Salesians_of_Don_Bosco) in 1977. He graduated from Christ College in 1978. After three years at Salesian College, Chadstone, he was transferred to Rome where he completed a [Licentiate in Sacred Theology](/source/Licentiate_in_Sacred_Theology) at the [Salesian Pontifical University](/source/Salesian_Pontifical_University) in 1991. On his return to Melbourne, Costelloe began lecturing in theology at [Catholic Theological College](/source/Catholic_Theological_College) in Melbourne. Transferred to [Perth](/source/Perth%2C_Western_Australia) in 1996, Costelloe served as [parish priest](/source/parish_priest) St Joachim's Victoria Park and lectured at the [University of Notre Dame Australia](/source/University_of_Notre_Dame_Australia), Fremantle. He completed his doctorate in theology from the [Melbourne College of Divinity](/source/Melbourne_College_of_Divinity). He returned to Melbourne in 1999, was appointed as rector to the Salesian community, and resumed teaching commitments at the Catholic Theological College. He was appointed as parish priest of St John the Baptist's [Clifton Hill](/source/Clifton_Hill%2C_Victoria) in 2006 and as parish priest of the adjoining St Joseph's[Collingwood](/source/Collingwood%2C_Victoria) in 2007. ===Episcopate===
In April 2007, Costelloe was appointed an [auxiliary bishop](/source/Bishop_(Catholic_Church)) of [Melbourne](/source/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Melbourne) and [titular bishop](/source/titular_bishop) of [Cluain Iraird](/source/Clonard_Abbey). He was consecrated on 15 June 2007 by [Denis Hart](/source/Denis_Hart), Archbishop of Melbourne, with Cardinal [George Pell](/source/George_Pell), Archbishop of Sydney, and [Ambrose De Paoli](/source/Ambrose_De_Paoli), [apostolic nuncio](/source/apostolic_nuncio) to Australia) as co-consecrators.<ref>{{Catholic-hierarchy|bishop|bcostet|Archbishop Timothy John Costelloe|16 July 2021}}</ref>

With a strong interest in Catholic education, Costelloe held a number of senior roles in the Melbourne archdiocese, including being the episcopal vicar for tertiary education and the chair of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria. An adjunct professor at the [Australian Catholic University](/source/Australian_Catholic_University), he is also a member of the [Australian Catholic Bishops Conference](/source/Australian_Catholic_Bishops_Conference) Commission for Catholic Education.<ref name=cam/>
