==Early life==
Born in May 1927,<ref name=Barclays>{{cite web|title=Sir Timothy Bevan (Chairman 1981-1987)|url=https://www.archive.barclays.com/items/show/19499|website=Barclays|accessdate=4 August 2015}}</ref><ref name=CompaniesHouse>{{cite web|title=Seahorse Yachts Limited|url=https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/03449449/officers|website=Companies House|accessdate=6 August 2015}}</ref> the younger brother of Robert Francis Bevan (who married Philippa Sumner), he is a direct descendant of both [Silvanus Bevan](/source/Silvanus_Bevan_(1743-1830)) (1743–1830) and of [David Barclay](/source/David_Barclay_of_Cheapside) (1682–1769), two of the original senior partners in Barclay, Bevan, Tritton and Co.<ref name=Barclays/>

Bevan was educated at [Eton College](/source/Eton_College),<ref name=Barclays /> before being commissioned in the [British Army](/source/British_Army), and served with the [Welsh Guards](/source/Welsh_Guards) from 1945 to 1947.<ref name=Barclays/> He studied the Law and was called to the bar in 1950.<ref name=Barclays/>

Bevan started his career at the family business, [Barclays Bank](/source/Barclays_Bank), in 1950<ref name=Barclays/> and worked in its offices in London, Manchester, [Preston](/source/Preston%2C_Lancashire), and [Luton](/source/Luton), then in France and [Cyprus](/source/Cyprus) until 1955, when he returned to Britain, joining the offices in [Leeds](/source/Leeds), [Nottingham](/source/Nottingham), and [Lombard Street, London](/source/Lombard_Street%2C_London).<ref name=Barclays/>
