***Timbellus phaneus***, common name: the **phaneus murex**, is a [species](/source/Species) of [sea snail](/source/Sea_snail), a marine [gastropod](/source/Gastropod) [mollusk](/source/Mollusk) in the [family](/source/Family_(taxonomy)) [Muricidae](/source/Muricidae), the murex snails or rock snails.[1]

## Description

The size of an adult shell varies between 7 mm and 35 mm.

## Distribution

This marine species is found in the [Gulf of Mexico](/source/Gulf_of_Mexico) and the [Caribbean Sea](/source/Caribbean_Sea); in the Atlantic Ocean from [South Carolina](/source/South_Carolina) to [Brazil](/source/Brazil).
