The **Timachi** were a [Thracian tribe](/source/Thracian_tribe) in living by present-day [Timok](/source/Timok_(river)), [Serbia](/source/Serbia), then part of [Moesia Inferior](/source/Moesia_Inferior) (87 AD). It[*[clarification needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*] may have been an artificial creation by the Romans.[1] In the 1st century before [Claudius](/source/Claudius) conquest of [Thrace](/source/Thrace), [Pliny the Elder](/source/Pliny_the_Elder) lists them as one of the Moesian tribes alongside [Dardanians](/source/Dardanians_(Balkans)), [Celegeri](/source/Celegeri), [Triballi](/source/Triballi) and [Moesi](/source/Moesi).[2][3]

The territorial unit of the Timachi was small, limited to a single valley system around the [Danube](/source/Danube) where each tributary was guarded by an auxiliary garrison supervised by *praefecti*.[1]

They have received or given their name to the Timok region (*TIMACUS*).[3]

The [Celegeri](/source/Celegeri) and Timachi were replaced with the Romanized tribes of [Tricornenses](/source/Tricornenses) and [Picenses](/source/Picenses) respectively.[2] The Picenses of [Pincum](/source/Pincum) (*[Gradište](/source/Veliko_Gradi%C5%A1te)*) "replaced" the Timachi.[3]
