# Tim Thorpe

**Timothy Thorpe** (born 3 October 1983) is a British horn player.

## Life and career

Thorpe was born on 3 October 1983.[1] He attended [Watford Grammar School for Boys](/source/Watford_Grammar_School_for_Boys),[2] and was a member of the [National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain](/source/National_Youth_Orchestra_of_Great_Britain),[3] and the [Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester](/source/Gustav_Mahler_Jugendorchester).[4] He attended [The Purcell School for Young Musicians](/source/The_Purcell_School_for_Young_Musicians) until 2002,[2] when he won a scholarship to [Guildhall School of Music and Drama](/source/Guildhall_School_of_Music_and_Drama),[2] where he studied [French horn](/source/French_horn) with Hugh Seenan.[1] Thorpe became principal horn with the [BBC National Orchestra of Wales](/source/BBC_National_Orchestra_of_Wales).[2] In this position he was the soloist on Mozart's [Horn Concerto No. 4](/source/Horn_Concerto_No._4_(Mozart)), performed at the [Teatro Colón](/source/Teatro_Col%C3%B3n) in Argentina and broadcast by [BBC Radio 3](/source/BBC_Radio_3),[5] and on other broadcast concerts.[6] Thorpe has been a guest performer with major London orchestras,[6] the [New Zealand Symphony Orchestra](/source/New_Zealand_Symphony_Orchestra),[6] and [Melbourne Symphony Orchestra](/source/Melbourne_Symphony_Orchestra),[7][8] the [London Sinfonietta](/source/London_Sinfonietta) chamber orchestra and the [Nash Ensemble](/source/Nash_Ensemble).[9]

Thorpe has taught at the [Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama](/source/Royal_Welsh_College_of_Music_%26_Drama),[10] at [Wells Cathedral School](/source/Wells_Cathedral_School)[9] and gave [master classes](/source/Master_class) for *Bromley Youth Music Trust*,[11] *Music for Everyone*[12] and *National Youth French Horn Ensemble of Great Britain*.[6]

## Awards

In 2004 Thorpe was a winner of the [Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition](/source/Royal_Over-Seas_League#Annual_Music_competition),[17] and won the [Royal Philharmonic Society](/source/Royal_Philharmonic_Society)'s Philip Jones Memorial Prize.[10]
