**Timothy Richard Stratford** (born 26 February 1961) is an [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [priest](/source/Priest) and author.[1][2] Since 2018, he has been [Dean of Chester](/source/Dean_of_Chester) in the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England). He was previously [Archdeacon of Leicester](/source/Archdeacon_of_Leicester) from 2012 to 2018.

## Early life and education

Stratford was born on 26 February 1961 in [Liverpool](/source/Liverpool), England. He was educated at [Knowsley Hey School](/source/Lord_Derby_Academy), a [comprehensive school](/source/Comprehensive_school) in [Huyton](/source/Huyton), Merseyside. He studied at the [University of Leicester](/source/University_of_Leicester), graduating with a [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) (BSc) degree in 1982, and trained for ordination at [Wycliffe Hall, Oxford](/source/Wycliffe_Hall%2C_Oxford).[3] He later studied for a [Doctor of Philosophy](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) (PhD) degree at the [University of Sheffield](/source/University_of_Sheffield), submitting his doctorate in 2008: his thesis was titled "Urban liturgy in the Church of England: a historical, theological and anthropological analysis of the mid-Victorian slum priest [ritualists](/source/Ritualists) and their legacy".[4]

## Ordained ministry

He was [ordained](/source/Ordained) [deacon](/source/Deacon) in 1986 and [priest](/source/Priest) in 1987.[5] After [curacies](/source/Curate) in [Mossley Hill](/source/Mossley_Hill) and [St Helens](/source/St_Helens%2C_Merseyside) he was [chaplain](/source/Chaplain) to [David Sheppard](/source/David_Sheppard), [Bishop of Liverpool](/source/Bishop_of_Liverpool) from 1991 to 1994. He was [vicar](/source/Vicar) of [West Derby](/source/West_Derby) from 1994 to 2003;[6] and [team rector](/source/Team_rector) of [Kirkby](/source/Kirkby) from 2003 to 2012. He was [Archdeacon of Leicester](/source/Archdeacon_of_Leicester) from 2012[7] until his installation as [Dean of Chester](/source/Dean_of_Chester) on 8 September 2018.[8]

On 7 June 2024, he officiated the wedding of [Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster](/source/Hugh_Grosvenor%2C_7th_Duke_of_Westminster) and [Olivia Grace Henson](/source/Olivia_Grace_Henson).[9]

## Personal life

In 1986, Stratford married Jennifer. They have three sons.[3]
