**Timothy Darrell Russ**[1] (born June 22, 1956) is an American actor, musician, screenwriter, director and amateur astronomer. He is best known for his roles as [Lieutenant Commander](/source/Lieutenant_Commander) [Tuvok](/source/Tuvok) on *[Star Trek: Voyager](/source/Star_Trek%3A_Voyager)*; [Robert Johnson](/source/Robert_Johnson) in *[Crossroads](/source/Crossroads_(1986_film))* (1986); Casey in *[East of Hope Street](/source/East_of_Hope_Street)* (1998); Frank on *[Samantha Who?](/source/Samantha_Who%3F)*; Principal Franklin on the [Nickelodeon](/source/Nickelodeon) sitcom *[iCarly](/source/ICarly)*; D. ## Early life, family and education

Russ was born in [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.), on June 22, 1956, to a [government employee](/source/Government_employee) mother and a [U.S. Air Force](/source/U.S._Air_Force) officer father.[1] He spent part of his childhood in [Turkey](/source/Turkey). He attended his senior year of high school at [Rome Free Academy](/source/Rome_Free_Academy), from which he graduated in 1974.[2] He graduated from [St. Edward's University](/source/St._Edward's_University) with a degree in theater arts. He additionally attended graduate school at [Illinois State University](/source/Illinois_State_University) where he was inducted into its Hall of Fame. With a girlfriend, Jedda Roskilly, he has a daughter.[3]

## Career

### Acting

In 1985, Russ appeared in *[The Twilight Zone](/source/The_Twilight_Zone_(1985_TV_series))* episodes "[Kentucky Rye](/source/Kentucky_Rye_(The_Twilight_Zone))" as Officer #2 and "[Voices in the Earth](/source/Voices_in_the_Earth_(The_Twilight_Zone))" as Archer. He made a brief appearance in the comedy film *[Spaceballs](/source/Spaceballs)* as a trooper who "combs" the desert with a giant comb.[4][5] Russ had a prominent role in the Charles Bronson film *[Death Wish 4](/source/Death_Wish_4).*

Russ has been involved in the *[Star Trek](/source/Star_Trek)* franchise as a voice and film actor, writer, director, and producer. He played several minor roles before landing the role as the main character [Tuvok](/source/Tuvok) in *Star Trek: Voyager*. Russ screentested, in 1987, for the role of [Geordi La Forge](/source/Geordi_La_Forge) on *Star Trek: The Next Generation* before being cast as Tuvok. Russ went into *Voyager* as a dedicated [Trekkie](/source/Trekkie) with an extensive knowledge of [Vulcan](/source/Vulcan_(Star_Trek)) lore,[6] and has played the following roles in the *Star Trek* universe:

- Devor, a mercenary aboard the *Enterprise-D* disguised as a service engineer in *The Next Generation* episode "[Starship Mine](/source/Starship_Mine)" (1993)

- T'Kar, a [Klingon](/source/Klingon) in the *Deep Space Nine* episode "[Invasive Procedures](/source/Invasive_Procedures_(Star_Trek%3A_Deep_Space_Nine))" (1993)

- A human tactical Lieutenant on the USS *Enterprise-B* in the film *[Star Trek Generations](/source/Star_Trek_Generations)* (1994).

In 1995, Russ co-wrote the story for the [Malibu Comics](/source/Malibu_Comics) *[Star Trek: Deep Space Nine](/source/Star_Trek%3A_Deep_Space_Nine)* #29 and 30, with Mark Paniccia. Russ performed voice acting roles as Tuvok for the video games *[Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force](/source/Star_Trek%3A_Voyager_%E2%80%93_Elite_Force)* and *[Star Trek: Elite Force II](/source/Star_Trek%3A_Elite_Force_II)*. Russ is the director and one of the stars of the fan series *[Star Trek: Of Gods and Men](/source/Star_Trek%3A_Of_Gods_and_Men)*, the first third of which was released in December 2007, with the remaining two-thirds released in 2008.[7]

Russ appeared as Frank, a sarcastic doorman in the sitcom *[Samantha Who?](/source/Samantha_Who%3F)* from 2007 to 2009, and appeared for six seasons as Principal Ted Franklin in [Nickelodeon](/source/Nickelodeon)'s show *[iCarly](/source/ICarly)*. He also portrayed a doctor on an episode of *[Hannah Montana](/source/Hannah_Montana)*, "[I Am Hannah, Hear Me Croak](/source/I_Am_Hannah%2C_Hear_Me_Croak)".

Russ won an [Emmy Award](/source/Emmy_Award) in 2014 for [public service ads](/source/Public_service_ad) he did for the FBI's Los Angeles Field Office on [intellectual property](/source/Intellectual_property) theft and [cyberbullying](/source/Cyberbullying).[10]

He played Captain Kells in the 2015 [Bethesda Game Studios](/source/Bethesda_Game_Studios) video game *[Fallout 4](/source/Fallout_4)*.[11]

In June 2025, following [Mel Brooks](/source/Mel_Brooks)’ announcement of *Spaceballs 2*, slated for release in 2027, Russ teased on social media that he may appear in the film, along with his more famous co-stars.[12]

### Music and astronomy

Russ has been a lifelong musician and a singer.[13] In addition, Russ has been an avid amateur astronomer most of his adult life, and is a member of the [Los Angeles Astronomical Society](https://www.laas.org/). In 2021 he was among a small group of citizen astronomers who assisted in detection of the asteroid [617 Patroclus](/source/617_Patroclus) in preparation for [NASA](/source/NASA)'s [Lucy probe](/source/Lucy_(spacecraft)).[14] In February 2022, he stated that he owned a 10-inch Dobsonian telescope, an 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, and a Unistellar eVscope.[15]
