# Tim Newburn

**William Henry Timothy Newburn** (born 4 July 1959) is an [academic](/source/Academic_staff), specialising in [criminology](/source/Criminology) and [policing](/source/Policing).[1]

## Career

He was president of the [British Society of Criminology](/source/British_Society_of_Criminology) from 2005 to 2008, director of the [Mannheim Centre for Criminology](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mannheim_Centre_for_Criminology&action=edit&redlink=1) from 2003 to 2008 and is currently head of the Department of Social Policy at the [London School of Economics and Political Science](/source/London_School_of_Economics_and_Political_Science). From 1997, he was Director of the Public Policy Research Unit at [Goldsmiths College](/source/Goldsmiths_College) and has previously worked at the [Policy Studies Institute](/source/Policy_Studies_Institute), the [National Institute for Social Work](/source/National_Institute_for_Social_Work), the [Home Office](/source/Home_Office) and [Leicester University](/source/Leicester_University).[2]

He has published widely on crime and the police, his publications include *Criminology* (2007)[3] and the *Handbook of Policing* (2008). He has also written for *[The Independent](/source/The_Independent)*.[4]

In 2017, Newburn published a third edition of *Criminology*, a follow-up to his 2013 Second Edition. It is 1143 pages long and provides an in-depth analysis of crime and criminology, as well as the theories and concepts related to it.
