## Career

### Early years

Initially a [cyclo-cross](/source/Cyclo-cross) specialist, Merlier turned professional with [Sunweb–Revor](/source/Pauwels_Sauzen%E2%80%93Bingoal) in 2011, after having been a [national junior champion](/source/Belgian_National_Cyclo-cross_Championships) two seasons prior. With the team, he saw modest success on the under-23 level, winning a round of the [2012–13 Under-23 Bpost Bank Trophy](/source/2012%E2%80%9313_Cyclo-cross_bpost_bank_trophy), in addition to several podiums in high level races.

### Road beginnings (2015–2018)

In 2015, he joined [Vastgoedservice–Golden Palace](/source/Pauwels_Sauzen%E2%80%93Vastgoedservice), where he had his first notable result in a road race, placing third in [Schaal Sels](/source/Schaal_Sels). The following year, he took his first pro road win at the [Grote Prijs Stad Zottegem](/source/Egmont_Cycling_Race).

Merlier at the start of the [2015 E3 Harelbeke](/source/2015_E3_Harelbeke).

Following this win, he transferred to [UCI Professional Continental](/source/UCI_Professional_Continental) team [Vérandas Willems–Crelan](/source/V%C3%A9randas_Willems%E2%80%93Crelan) for the 2017 season. In his second season with the team, he took two stage victories and the points classification at the [Danmark Rundt](/source/Danmark_Rundt).[13]

### Corendon–Circus (2019–2022)

From this point on, his road career started to take off, joining [Pauwels Sauzen–Vastgoedservice](/source/Pauwels_Sauzen%E2%80%93Vastgoedservice) in 2019.[2] This year marked his most notable win yet: the [Belgian national road race championship](/source/Belgian_National_Road_Race_Championships), in addition to another stage of the [Danmark Rundt](/source/2019_Danmark_Rundt) as well as the one-day [Elfstedenronde](/source/Elfstedenronde). In 2020, he again had three wins, including his first [UCI ProSeries](/source/UCI_ProSeries) event: the [Brussels Cycling Classic](/source/2020_Brussels_Cycling_Classic), and his first win at the [UCI WorldTour](/source/UCI_WorldTour) level, winning stage six of [Tirreno–Adriatico](/source/2020_Tirreno%E2%80%93Adriatico), both in sprint finishes.[14][15][16]

In 2021, Merlier took several victories in Belgian semi-classics, including the [Bredene Koksijde Classic](/source/2021_Bredene_Koksijde_Classic), [Le Samyn](/source/2021_Le_Samyn), [Grote Prijs Jean-Pierre Monseré](/source/2021_Grote_Prijs_Jean-Pierre_Monser%C3%A9), [Ronde van Limburg](/source/Ronde_van_Limburg_(Belgium)) and a second win of the [Elfstedenronde](/source/Elfstedenronde).[17][18] He also placed third in the [Dwars door Vlaanderen](/source/2021_Dwars_door_Vlaanderen).[19] In May, he entered his first [Grand Tour](/source/Grand_Tour_(cycling)): the [Giro d'Italia](/source/2021_Giro_d'Italia), where he won the second stage in a sprint ahead of [Giacomo Nizzolo](/source/Giacomo_Nizzolo) and [Elia Viviani](/source/Elia_Viviani).[20] In the process he took over the lead of the points classification, but dropped out after stage 10. In July, he took arguably the most important result of his career so far, winning stage three of the [Tour de France](/source/2021_Tour_de_France), outsprinting [Jasper Philipsen](/source/Jasper_Philipsen) and [Nacer Bouhanni](/source/Nacer_Bouhanni).[8]

Merlier had a strong start to 2022, winning the second stage of [Tirreno–Adriatico](/source/2022_Tirreno%E2%80%93Adriatico) in March, followed by the [Nokere Koerse](/source/2022_Nokere_Koerse) and [Classic Brugge–De Panne](/source/2022_Classic_Brugge%E2%80%93De_Panne) later that month.[21][22][23] In June, he was crowned that [National Champion](/source/Belgian_National_Road_Race_Championships) for a second time in a photo finish with [Jordi Meeus](/source/Jordi_Meeus).[10] In August he won the bronze medal in the [European Road Race Championships](/source/2022_European_Road_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men's_road_race), and competed in his first [Vuelta a España](/source/2022_Vuelta_a_Espa%C3%B1a). He ended the year with a win at the [Memorial Rik Van Steenbergen](/source/Memorial_Rik_Van_Steenbergen) in October.

### Soudal–Quick-Step (2023–)

In August 2022, Merlier signed a three-year contract with [UCI WorldTeam](/source/UCI_WorldTeam) [Soudal–Quick-Step](/source/Soudal_Quick-Step).[24] Early into his first year with the team, he took several wins in the Middle East, including a stage of the [Tour of Oman](/source/2023_Tour_of_Oman) and two stages and the points classification of the [UAE Tour](/source/2023_UAE_Tour). He maintained this momentum going into March with a stage win of [Paris–Nice](/source/2023_Paris%E2%80%93Nice), and defending his title at [Nokere Koerse](/source/2022_Nokere_Koerse) ten days later.[25] In August, he won two stages of the [Tour de Pologne](/source/2023_Tour_de_Pologne), followed by the [Grand Prix de Fourmies](/source/2023_Grand_Prix_de_Fourmies) a month later.[26] In total, Merlier had 11 wins this season, his most successful to date.

Going into 2024, Merlier again showed strong form in the early season, taking two stages and the points classification of the [AlUla Tour](/source/2024_AlUla_Tour) and three stages and the points classification of the [UAE Tour](/source/2024_UAE_Tour). He placed second to [Jasper Philipsen](/source/Jasper_Philipsen) on stage two of [Tirreno–Adriatico](/source/2024_Tirreno%E2%80%93Adriatico), but beat him at the [Nokere Koerse](/source/2024_Nokere_Koerse), taking the race for a third consecutive year.[27][28] He again was outsprinted by Philipsen a week later at the [Classic Brugge–De Panne](/source/2024_Classic_Brugge%E2%80%93De_Panne) but rallied to win [Scheldeprijs](/source/2024_Scheldeprijs) in early April.[29] Merlier started the [2024 Giro d'Italia](/source/2024_Giro_d'Italia), his first Grand Tour since the [2022 Vuelta a España](/source/2022_Vuelta_a_Espa%C3%B1a), where he won a bunch sprint ahead of [Jonathan Milan](/source/Jonathan_Milan) on Stage 3 into [Fossano](/source/Fossano), propelling himself into the [maglia ciclamino](/source/Maglia_ciclamino). Merlier won again on stages 18 and 21, finishing third overall in the points classification.[30] At the European Road Championships in September, Merlier won the elite men's road race, finishing ahead of [Olav Kooij](/source/Olav_Kooij) and his Belgian teammate [Jasper Philipsen](/source/Jasper_Philipsen).[31] Merlier finished the season with 16 wins, second only to [Tadej Pogacar](/source/Tadej_Pogacar) in the men's peloton.[32]

At the start of the 2025 season, Merlier won stages 1 and 3 of the [AlUla Tour](/source/2025_AlUla_Tour).[33] He then followed this up, with back to back stage wins in the [UAE Tour](/source/2025_UAE_Tour), winning stages 5 and 6.[34]

## Personal life

Merlier's brother, [Braam](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Braam_Merlie&action=edit&redlink=1), also formerly competed as a professional cyclist.

On February 1, 2023, Merlier and his girlfriend Cameron Vandenbroucke, daughter of former cyclist [Frank Vandenbroucke](/source/Frank_Vandenbroucke_(cyclist)), had a son, Jules.[35]
