Lord was born on 10 February 1966, the son of [Michael Lord, Baron Framlingham](/source/Michael_Lord).<ref name="Who’s Who 2014" />  He was educated at [Bedford Modern School](/source/Bedford_Modern_School) and [Christ's College, Cambridge](/source/Christ's_College%2C_Cambridge) where he earned a [blue](/source/Blue_(university_sport)) for [rugby](/source/Rugby_union).

Lord qualified as a solicitor in 1991 with [Slaughter & May](/source/Slaughter_and_May) but was subsequently [called to the Bar](/source/Call_to_the_bar) at the [Inner Temple](/source/Inner_Temple) in 1992, practising at [Brick Court Chambers](/source/Brick_Court_Chambers).
