**Timothy Edward Sullivan Bateman** (born 3 June 1987) is a [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player from [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand). He plays mostly [Inside Centre](/source/Inside_Centre).

He was head boy of [Christchurch Boys' High School](/source/Christchurch_Boys'_High_School) in Canterbury, New Zealand. He formerly played for the [Crusaders](/source/Crusaders_(rugby_union)) and played in Japan for the [Coca-Cola Red Sparks](/source/Coca-Cola_Red_Sparks). He also had a stint at the [Hurricanes](/source/Hurricanes_(rugby_union)) in [Super Rugby](/source/Super_Rugby). In 2017, he has returned to play for the Crusaders.

Of [Ngāi Tahu](/source/Ng%C4%81i_Tahu) descent, Bateman played for the [Māori All Blacks](/source/M%C4%81ori_All_Blacks) in 2008 and 2012.[1][2] He has also represented New Zealand at Under 19 and Under 21 level.[3]

## Playing career

### School boy rugby

While at [Christchurch Boys' High School](/source/Christchurch_Boys'_High_School), Bateman appeared alongside All Blacks [Colin Slade](/source/Colin_Slade), [Matt Todd](/source/Matt_Todd) and [Owen Franks](/source/Owen_Franks) as well as former Crusader [Nasi Manu](/source/Nasi_Manu).[4]

### Later career

After spending a few years playing rugby in Japan, Bateman returned home and signed with his former club the [Crusaders](/source/Crusaders_(rugby_union)) for the [2017](/source/2017_Super_Rugby_season). He played six games and scored three tries in his return season. Bateman was a part of the 2017 [Crusaders](/source/Crusaders_(rugby_union)) championship winning side in 2017.

Bateman also signed with former provincial team [Canterbury](/source/Canterbury_Rugby_Football_Union) ahead of the [2017 Mitre 10 Cup](/source/2017_Mitre_10_Cup) season.

He scored a try in Canterbury's 35-13 Grand Final win against Tasman.
