# Tim Allpress

**Tim John Allpress** (born 27 January 1971) is an English former [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)) in [the Football League](/source/The_Football_League) for [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.), [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.) and [Colchester United](/source/Colchester_United_F.C.), and in the German [2. Bundesliga](/source/2._Bundesliga) for [Bayer Uerdingen](/source/KFC_Uerdingen_05).

## Career

Born in [Hitchin](/source/Hitchin), Allpress began his career with [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.), coming through the youth ranks. After signing his first professional deal in July 1989, he made only one appearance for the club, and was later sent on loan to [Preston North End](/source/Preston_North_End_F.C.) in 1991. Allpress made nine appearances between his debut on 2 November 1991, a 3–2 defeat at [Chester](/source/Chester_City_F.C.), and 1 January 1992, a 1–0 defeat at [Bournemouth](/source/AFC_Bournemouth).[3] He was released from his Luton contract when the club were relegated from the [First Division](/source/Football_League_First_Division).[2] He joined non-league side [Boston United](/source/Boston_United_F.C.) in 1993, making four league appearances, before moving to Germany to play for [Bayer Uerdingen](/source/KFC_Uerdingen_05).[4]

Allpress returned to England after his spell in Germany to sign for [Colchester United](/source/Colchester_United_F.C.) in August 1993 under [Roy McDonough](/source/Roy_McDonough), who had seen him playing for Luton Reserves.[2] He made his debut for the club as a substitute for [Simon Betts](/source/Simon_Betts) in a 2–1 [League Cup](/source/EFL_Cup) defeat to [Fulham](/source/Fulham_F.C.) at [Craven Cottage](/source/Craven_Cottage) on 17 August 1993.[5] Allpress made 34 [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) appearances for Colchester between 1993 and 1995,[6] but was released by new manager [George Burley](/source/George_Burley) in March 1995.[2]

Following his release from Colchester, Allpress dropped out of the Football League to join hometown club [Hitchin Town](/source/Hitchin_Town_F.C.) for a brief spell. He then moved to Hong Kong-based club Enterprise before returning to England and Hitchin. He later signed for [St Albans City](/source/St_Albans_City_F.C.) in 1999, but once again departed to Hitchin for a third spell, making more than 250 appearances for the club. He was named the supporters' 'Player of the Year' for the [2000–01 season](/source/2000%E2%80%9301_in_English_football).[3]

## Personal life

Outside of football, Allpress is a [constable](/source/Constable) in the [Metropolitan Police Service](/source/Metropolitan_Police_Service).[3] He featured in a [BBC](/source/BBC) documentary about the notorious [Broadwater Farm riot](/source/Broadwater_Farm_riot) in North London in 1985, focussing on the changes to the area 20 years on, which at the time of the documentary was Allpress' [beat](/source/Beat_(police)) where he worked as a community officer alongside [Winston Silcott](/source/Winston_Silcott).[2]
