**Tim Bronson Reginald Albery** (born 20 May 1952) is an English stage director, best known for his productions of opera.

## Life and career

Albery was born in [Harpenden](/source/Harpenden), the son of the impresario [Donald Albery](/source/Donald_Albery) and grandson of the producer [Sir Bronson Albery](/source/Bronson_Albery).[1] Albery's brother was the social inventor [Nicholas Albery](/source/Nicholas_Albery).[2] After directing drama in the British provinces, he directed his first operatic production, [Britten](/source/Benjamin_Britten)'s *[The Turn of the Screw](/source/The_Turn_of_the_Screw)* for a music festival at [Batignano](/source/Batignano), Italy in 1983. For [Opera North](/source/Opera_North), Albery directed operas by [Tippett](/source/Michael_Tippett), [Mozart](/source/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart) and most notably [Berlioz](/source/Hector_Berlioz): his production of *[Les Troyens](/source/Les_Troyens)* is described by *[The New Grove Dictionary of Opera](/source/Grove_Dictionary_of_Music_and_Musicians)* as "triumphant".[1]

For the [English National Opera](/source/English_National_Opera) (ENO), Albery directed Berlioz’s *[Beatrice and Benedict](/source/B%C3%A9atrice_et_B%C3%A9n%C3%A9dict)* (1990) and Britten’s *[Billy Budd](/source/Billy_Budd_(opera))* (1988) and *[Peter Grimes](/source/Peter_Grimes)* (1991).[1] Together with his fellow directors, [Richard Jones](/source/Richard_Jones_(director)), [Jude Kelly](/source/Jude_Kelly), [Phyllida Lloyd](/source/Phyllida_Lloyd), [Deborah Warner](/source/Deborah_Warner) and [Francesca Zambello](/source/Francesca_Zambello), Albery publicly supported ENO's general director Nicholas Payne in his dispute with the ENO's chairman Martin Smith over avant-garde productions. They wrote, "The aim must be to create a new audience that does not see opera as a middle-class trophy art form: an audience that Payne was beginning to attract to the Coliseum."[3]

For [Scottish Opera](/source/Scottish_Opera), Albery directed [Wagner](/source/Richard_Wagner)'s *[Ring](/source/Der_Ring_des_Nibelungen)* cycle between 1999 and 2003,[4] and Mozart's *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)* in 2006.[5]

In a partnership with [Soundstreams](/source/Soundstreams_Canada) and [Luminato](/source/Luminato_Festival), Albery both Directed and Created *Hell's Fury* in 2019.[6]

*Grove's Dictionary* describes Albery's style as "a modern visual and dramatic language that combined stillness, taut economy, intense feeling for states of psychological and poetic complexity, and deep musical responsiveness" creating "a powerful impression of musico-dramatic revelation."[1]
