**Timothy Joseph Ahearne** (17 August 1885 – 12 December 1968)[1] was an Irish [track and field](/source/Track_and_field) athlete who competed for the [United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland](/source/United_Kingdom_of_Great_Britain_and_Ireland) in the [1908 Summer Olympics](/source/1908_Summer_Olympics).[2]

## Biography

Son of William Aherne, a farmer, and Margaret Aherne (née Shine), he was born in Dirreen, [Athea](/source/Athea), [Limerick](/source/Limerick),[3] and was the older brother of [Dan Ahearn](/source/Dan_Ahearn), the world record holder of the triple jump from 1911–1924.[4]

Ahearne won the gold medal in the [triple jump](/source/Triple_jump) at the [1908 Summer Olympics](/source/1908_Summer_Olympics) held in [London](/source/London) while representing the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He finished eighth in the [long jump competition](/source/Athletics_at_the_1908_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_long_jump) and also participated in the [standing long jump event](/source/Athletics_at_the_1908_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_standing_long_jump), but his result is unknown. In the [110 metre hurdles](/source/Athletics_at_the_1908_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_110_metres_hurdles), where he was an Irish champion, he was eliminated in the semi-finals.[5]

After his Olympic victory in 1908, Ahearne won the British [AAA Championships](/source/AAA_Championships) title in the long jump event at the [1909 AAA Championships](/source/1909_AAA_Championships).[6][7][8]

Ahearne emigrated to New York in 1909 and joined the [Irish American Athletic Club](/source/Irish_American_Athletic_Club). He also competed for a time for the rival [New York Athletic Club](/source/New_York_Athletic_Club). Later in life, Ahearne raised "prize-winning" cattle on a farm in [upstate New York](/source/Upstate_New_York).[9][10] His current relatives live in America today.
